"It is a subject which arouses strong feelings, both political and racial. It is a field in which the Government has statutory liabilities as well as moral ones." [Colony And Protectorate Of Kenya, Sessional Paper No. 77 of 1956/57, The Development Programme 1957/60 (1957) (page 65)]

"The determination of the proportion of development funds which should be allotted to education is perhaps the most difficult problem which faces the Government in drawing up the development programme. Education is a social service, but it has a very considerable long-term economic importance."

I savoured Reuters' recent footage from Asmara but was puzzled to see Eritrea's role in the shockingly brutal 2020-2022 war in Tigray getting only a cursory mention. A key chapter in regional history glossed over. www.reuters.com/investigates...

But alas they were not called missionaries rather 'Native Christian Helpers' or 'Native Agents'. The six and many others had been rescued from slavery in the Indian Ocean when they were children, grown up in India, educated there and became Christians. Then instructed by missionaries at Sharunpur.

Two single women were sent by the Church Missionary Society in late 1864, to work at the station in Rabai led by Johannes Rebmann. Sisters Polly and Priscilla Christian. They traveled with four others from Bombay - Grace and Ishmael Semler, William Henry Jones and his wife.

Getty Images (Bettmann Archive) sells the 'A Kikuyu Mother and Child' photos for anywhere from USD $70 to $140. 🤔 It seems unlikely that the lady in the photo consented to the commercial use of her image, and that of her child, for the benefit of others but to her exclusion. (5/5)

Dr. Blakeslee died in March 1963 in Florida. I am puzzled how Getty Images (Bettmann Archive) acquired the rights to the photo that was created in May 1923. Or did Moody Press Chicago use a photo that belonged to someone else and not give them credit in the book. (4/5)

My assumption was that Dr. Blakeslee made all the photos. Or they were given to her by the photographers (owners) who she knew well. As such they did not need to be credited. I was surprised to find out that Getty Images (Bettmann Archive) owns the photo. (3/5) www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-...
