Exactly… I feel like I’m the only one that ever questioned that “successful” qualifier…

The word “successful” has done a lot of heavy lifting in the whole Russia interference saga…

Why the EU fears Britain becoming a back door for Chinese cars
Brussels is urging UK tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, but it might take more than that

I’ve been advocating this for a while… Canada has lots of space and resources and not enough people; Europe the opposite (very big generalisation obviously), but FoM presumably costs CA little and the market access a huge plus. Win win win!

The whole of British society seems to take it as given that "losing" the pound = bad thing but I guarantee that challenging this lazy assumption will change minds. Just point to how it has made Germany, Ireland, France, Netherlands, much richer. As for 'tradition', the UK pound is younger than me.

The thing about social media age restrictions is that it treats today’s internet as an inevitability we all just have to deal with. The internet (and the WORLD) wasn’t like this until like four dudes were allowed to own & monetize as much tech real estate as they wanted. Fix THAT problem.

Exactly… Brexit ushered in an era when words stopped meaning anything; lies / costs / compromises/ realities all discarded… we still have politicians; we just don’t have genuine democracy and honest information anymore

A lot of adjectives and superlatives doing a lot of heavy lifting in that document, when people might only remember Brexit continuation; immigrant demonisation; lavish donor gifts; weak USA / Israeli foreign policy?

Reform have now lost six by-elections in a row in England, Scotland and Wales. Their national poll rating is 26% – below Labour in 1983 – and Farage’s approval rating is -37. They’re very far from the voice of the people and need to stop being treated as such.

Their promises of more jobs, more trade, more power for Britain have proved a con, Michael Heseltine writes as the Brexit vote 10th anniversary approaches. Never have so few done so much damage to so many with so little ability to execute what they lied about. Their scandalously false prospectus has turned to dust and ashes. Naturally, they blame everyone but themselves.
They are the guilty men and should...

It really is; most people are not politically engaged, and if they are flooded with sophisticated technical propaganda, they are not making free choices... so yes "distorting the debate" is right, and distorting democracy therefore.

You cannot have meaningful democracy when the information space is so corrupted. That’s a hill I will die on. It’s not about being patronising, it’s literally removing agency and free will from people

Not quite but yes close. I do think long term residents/tax payers should have those rights, and it was obviously morally unfair in view of the direct impact it had, but that’s clearly a different argument… and people rightly made a big fuss over the disinformation/dodgy funding breaches etc

Alex @alexkorff.com · 09/06/2026
It wasn’t that democratic when EU citizens in UK couldn’t vote, but Commonwealth citizens could, and the disinformation was off the scale

Yup & Brexit needs a ‘truth and reconciliation’ commission, a formal Government apology to the EU and to all 350m EU citizens, esp. the 3-5m most directly impacted, and an acknowledgment that it was a harmful, self harming and terribly handled episode in British history. Not a talking heads doc.

Interesting that the idea of another EU referendum is regularly discussed on broascast media as something that would cause division and thus a bad idea. But plans to deport literally millions of people are discussed as administrative questions.

Contrary to Labour MPs saying people ‘hate’ Starmer, I don't hate him and their scape-goating of him misses the point. It is Labour policies and Brexit red lines that are the problem and I see no leadership candidate, indeed no Labour MP addressing that.

Those saying Europe's economy should be like US misunderstand Europe, its values and what works to make lives better. Good explanation below of Europe's strengths and some policies to build on them. UK should be in EU arguing for those things, not outside squabbling with itself.

I'm 56. Racism was everywhere when I was a kid. People just did it, without comment. Normalised. In the 90s political correctness (later: Woke) appeared, and racism withdrew. I'm not saying it vanished. But by 2015, it was socially unacceptable, even in the rough areas I grew up in. Then Brexit.

Like a gut punch, this quietly spoken sentence from Lubaina Himid who is representing the UK at the Venice Biennale www.ft.com/content/2a58...
Himid has lived in Britain for more than seven decades, grown up here, been educated here, built a life and a career here
- and yet the question of what "here" actually means, of who gets to belong and who is merely tolerated, has never left her work. "We do a thing, Magda and I, if we're booking a table on the phone, I will always do it," says Himid, whose RP-ish English has little trace of either London or Lancashire. "But when we go to a place we don't know, I always want Magda [who was born in Poland and is white] to go first. She signifies one thing visually and I signify another thing audibly. Together, we are incredibly belonging and unbelonging."

Currency denomination is a very stupid thing to be nostalgic about. It’s much more sensible to be part of a larger stable currency than cling on to a sense of history/pride for the sake of it.

Yes, and also the bit that I simply can’t understand is how joining the euro always seems to be presented as a problem for Rejoin, not an opportunity. A chance to join the single currency that has massively enriched its members? You should be biting our arm off.

Again.. that is not the key argument!!! They point is to pool together to join a stronger more powerful shared currency. It can even have a pound coin on the other half of many of the coins but it will be a Euro
