In biology, as in many other empirical sciences, drawing conclusions is often based on statistical analyses. Still, by far, the most common approach for this is null hypothesis significance testing, ....

Application of a Hopfield neural network to extract essential spectral patterns from ToF–SIMS spectra of peptides - Analytical Sciences
A recurrent neural network (RNN) system based on a Hopfield neural network (HNN) was developed to extract essential spectral patterns from the time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF–SIMS) spectra of peptide samples. Because ToF–SIMS produces various fragment ions from organic molecules, the interpretation of ToF–SIMS spectra is generally complicated. ToF–SIMS is useful for peptide analysis because it detects specific amino acid fragment ions from peptides that indicate peptide information. However, the ToF–SIMS spectra also contain fragment ions that do not preserve the main structures of the original molecules, which makes them difficult to interpret. Therefore, it is crucial to extract essential spectral patterns from the ToF–SIMS spectra of organic materials. Peptides were selected as the target organic materials for this study due to their systematic chemical structures. A modified HNN was trained on the ToF–SIMS spectra of each peptide, and the trained HNNs were then used to recall patterns for various peptide ToF–SIMS spectra. The results show that the modified HNN recall essential spectra containing specific ions, including the protonated molecular ions and amino acid fragment ions of target peptides. Furthermore, the HNN results revealed differences and similarities between peptides with similar and different amino acid sequences. Thus, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of the HNN in interpreting complex spectra and its potential for preprocessing data for further analysis. Graphical abstract

Sven Tougaard has announced he's making his QUASES software available free of charge. This is a very generous action and XPS users around the world will thank him for his kind offer. www.linkedin.com/feed/update/...
Important Announcement

The QUASES-Tougaard software package, widely used for XPS inelastic
background analysis and for determining the composition and morphology of
nanostructures, will become available free of charge beginning September 1,
2026.

From September 1, 2026
. Free for personal, educational, and academic use
. Commercial use will require a separate commercial license

From January 1, 2028
. The software will become completely free for both non-commercial and
commercial use

Information on software download, installation procedures, and licensing
terms will be published on this page, on the official QUASES website
(QUASES.com), and on the QUASES tutorial video site:
https://zenodo.org/records/5499741

Background to This Decision
I have decided to make this change to ensure the long-term availability and
broad dissemination of the software throughout the global XPS community.

Although I remain in excellent health, at the age of 75 it is prudent to plan for
a future time- possibly a decade or more from now-when continued
distribution through my company may no longer be feasible. Over the past
several years, I have carefully considered various options and have
concluded that this phased transition represents the most effective and
beneficial solution for the worldwide XPS community.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the many hundreds of
research groups at universities, national laboratories, and commercial
organizations that have supported the continued development of QUASES-
Tougaard through the purchase of software licenses over the past 32 years.

With the improvements implemented in recent years, Version 7.51 has
reached a mature, stable, and robust state. Consequently, the need for
future modifications is expected to be minimal.

It is my hope that QUASES-Tougaard will continue to serve as a valuable
tool for researchers around the world for many years to come.

This particularly becomes an issue w/ Red-Green LUTs. You can easily make the switch using this FIJI Plugin: In FIJI > Color > Replace Red with Magenta. This can be applied to videos as well. You can also view how images may appear to those w/ vision impairments: > Color > Simulate Color Blindness
Screenshot of a slide from a journal club presentation. You can see an image of a clown and a figure as they appear to people with normal vision, which appear very dim to people with protanopia. When you replace red with magenta using FIJI, the images appear much more clear for people with red color blindness.
