Suspiria (1977) was a life-changing experience for me. Seeing a grainy old film print at the Alamo years ago, it expanded my perception of what a movie can do—of what storytelling can be. The hypnotic visuals, color of giallo, otherworldly music—it's a nightmare I don't want to wake from. 💀🖤🎃

Storytelling comes easily to me. I've spent nearly 20 years in communications, and it's one of the things my autistic brain loves to focus on. The hard part these days isn't writing. It's visibility—getting my stories in front of people. That voice always asking: What if no one ever sees this?

I’ve seen a lot of horror, both in life and in fiction. At this point, there isn’t much that can break through and bring chills to my black heart. Then Madame Frankenstein by Jamie S. Rich and Megan Levens came along. I’m still reeling after this one. Highly recommend. 💀🖤🎃

Beneath Alton, there are several mysterious 1800s-era tunnels that have no official explanation. A new one was discovered just five years ago. In this news video, that’s my mom and grandpa giving MOS interviews about 2/3 the way in. 💀🖤🎃 #WeirdAltonWednesday fox2now.com/news/illinoi...

I have to laser focus on something. It's how my mind works. So I choose to use that headspace for writing. At the same time, I have a full-time job, a family, a body that hurts all the time, and life going on. It's hard to make time to write. But when I do, it's exhilarating to my dark heart. 💀🖤🎃

The Alton prison held captured Confederates during the Civil War. For many, it was basically a death sentence. More than 1,300 soldiers died within three years due to overcrowding, poor sanitation and diseases like smallpox. Just one of the reasons Alton is so haunted. 💀🖤🎃 #WeirdAltonWednesday

Horror hosts have a special place in my black heart.‌ They make even the darkest tales feel communal, ushering us through stories that entertain, terrify, and reveal uncomfortable truths.‌ I want that job. 💀🖤🎃

They haven’t come to light yet—not yet—but I’ve written stories about ghosts, mummies, vampires, werewolves, zombies, witches, cryptids, and even the Old Ones. What’s neat about writing fiction is they’re all in some way autobiographical. Which parts are true? I’ll let you decide. 💀🖤🎃

Countless stories tell of ghosts wandering Alton's cemetery after dark. My grandpa grew up across the street, seen here in the early 1940s. When he and his siblings went out to play during the day, it was out in the graveyard. Just another childhood in Alton. 💀🖤🎃 #WeirdAltonWednesday

It was the summer of ‘99 and my family made a rare visit to Blockbuster. My mom picked up a VHS off the shelf—a movie called House on Haunted Hill. “You kids have got to see this,” she said. “It’s the perfect spook movie.” To this day I’m the biggest Vincent Price fan and I love this movie. 💀🖤🎃

Last year, I was diagnosed with Level 1 ASD. I took it hard. It proved I didn't just feel different. I am different. Then I realized some of my favorite artists and creators are autistic too. Now I'm learning how this world fits my brain and letting my creativity loose writing horror comics. 💀🖤🎃

This is the Piasa Bird, Alton's celebrated mythological creature. The version I grew up with, painted on the river bluffs today, is a modern interpretation of a much older Indigenous legend. Back in Boy Scouts, the older kids would tease that he'd eat us in our sleep. 💀🖤🎃 #WeirdAltonWednesday

My planned horror anthology draws from Alton's deep well of folklore. So I'm starting #WeirdAltonWednesday to tell you these stories and how they've intertwined with my life. It goes much deeper than Deaf Bill. Much, much deeper. 💀🖤🎃

One of my most formative horror experiences was reading Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. I learned horror can be nightmarish but also a hell of a lot of fun. The artwork is straight out of hell, but the stories also taught me some of the scariest moments come from what you don’t see. 💀🖤🎃

When TTOAI gets picked up, I’ve the first year of stories ready to go—12 story drafts written for four issues. I’m so excited for the world to see this. And so I’m not putting all my skulls into one crypt, I’ve got another project in the works—44 pages so far. I have such sights to show you. 💀🖤🎃

I was reading the Ignition Press newsletter and Jeremy Haun’s new comic, The Folk of Dooney Hollow, looks really really good. I’m kind of a sucker for folk horror. Also, it’s now my goal in life to get a review this great from Cullen Bunn.

There's a lot of pressure with pitching a comic—you get one shot with a publisher, and I'm a no-name writer sending cold pitches. Last spring, I went to Planet KC and asked many of my favorite creators for advice. They were gracious with their time and attention. It's a great community. 💀🖤🎃

So I was moving along with TTOAI with about a dozen scripts, a new ghost host and 8 finished pages of art to be finished by Jeremy. I wrote the pitch and probably went through a dozen different loglines and synopses to get the language just right—short and direct while also compelling. 💀🎃🖤

I pitched @jeremyshipleyart.bsky.social the idea: What if Mark Twain was Alton's Crypt Keeper? The dark energy of the Mississippi drags him back from the dead—against his will—to tell the town's strangest and ghastliest stories. What Jeremy came back with was better than I could have imagined.💀🖤🎃

alexhasselhorror.bsky.social @alexhasselhorror.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Who better to be Alton's ghost host than the father of American lit? Twain knew Alton from his days piloting steamboats. Local lore says he had a few choice words for the town. So I brought him back from the dead. In Twisted Tales of Alton, Twain became a sardonic and reluctant cryptkeeper. 💀🖤🎃

As in all great horror anthologies, I needed a host for Twisted Tales of Alton, Illinois. This is tricky because the right host can make or break an anthology. I needed someone with a connection to Alton, but who’s also recognizable. Someone fun—but also a friend of the macabre. 💀🖤🎃

While Jeremy created incredible art, I kept writing these EC-type horror comics about my life growing up in Alton. Some are based more on truth than others—I blur the line between reality and nightmare and let the reader decide what to believe. I’m calling it Twisted Tales of Alton, Illinois 💀🎃🖤

I hadn’t seen Jeremy in about 15 years, but he was excited about the Deaf Bill idea and we got planning. He wanted to experiment with art inspired by: House Kwaidan Arkham Asylum Hellspawn The Nightmare Factory Junji Ito EC Comics Giallos Guys, I can’t wait for you to see it. 💀🎃🖤

I wanted to bring my Deaf Bill script to life. I thought it would be special to work with an illustrator from the Alton era. Coincidentally, my old friend from high school, @jeremyshipleyart.bsky.social, is still the best artist I know—and he writes and draws indie comics. So I reached out. 💀🖤🎃

So last year, I tried writing a Tales from the Crypt-type story about Deaf Bill. It was a good comic script and really fun, so I kept writing EC-style stories about my life. I learned I have cinematic intuition, where I get an idea and just play through the story in my head like a movie. 💀🖤🎃

When I was 8, my mom asked if I wanted to go see “Deaf Bill.” I asked who that was. She said he was a vagrant whose corpse had been literally standing in a funeral home closet for 80 years because no one ever claimed him. I said I didn’t want to. She said, “Get in the car.”

When I finally gave myself permission to write for fun, I started with EC-style horror stories. Then I couldn't help drawing from my own strange and macabre experiences growing up in Alton. And after nearly 20 years in communications, the stories have poured onto the page so naturally. 💀🖤🎃

When it comes to horror, I think my biggest influence was this guy. He started it all. At about age seven, I'd stay up late and watch the edited reruns of Tales from the Crypt on the WB, even though they scared the hell out of me. I'm not sure I've ever had a good night's sleep since then. 💀🖤🎃

Every town has a ghost story. My hometown, Alton, IL, can fill a library. Not to mention its unsettling concentration of strange & unusual living history. Growing up there felt ordinary. But when you leave, you realize how unusual it really is. & even if you escape, Alton never escapes you. 💀🖤🎃
