Sadly, Bill C-5 doesn't advance any of those priorities. But I sure won't be forgetting how quickly this legislation moved through the House and Senate. Turns out it is possible to get big things done when we care enough.

Let's put the things that really matter to Canadians on the fast-track. Time with their loved ones. Protection from climate disasters. Affordable housing. Access to good public healthcare and education. Indigenous rights.

It may not be as easy to cut a ribbon on decreased deaths due to avoided pollution, and it sure as hell isn't simple to calculate the avoidance of loss, but wouldn't it be nice if the federal government paid more attention to that than whatever the C-suite is peddling around Ottawa these days.

I'm calling on PM @mark-carney.bsky.social to remember that hundreds of thousands of families depend on an eroding social safety net. That is a form of infrastructure, and would go way beyond pipelines in terms of nation-building.

Among the lessons learned from the ramming through of Bill C5: all that was needed to move swiftly on big transformative infrastructure projects this whole time was political will. Delay is a choice. Inaction is a choice. Imagine what we could have if politicians put their minds to achieving it. 🧵

👑 Our reaction to King Charles III's Speech from the Throne which sets out the Canadian government's priorities, a thread 🪡🧵: bit.ly/4dFVi50 #CdnPoli #ThroneSpeech
"Canada is at a crossroads which provides massive opportunities to address several crises facing this country at the same time. As Prime Minister Carney moves forward with ‘nation building’ projects, his first priorities should be to incentivize massive investments in renewable energy projects like wind, solar and geothermal, build an east-west electricity grid, and ensure that new homes are built to the highest green standards."

So cool reading about fossil fuel executives praising Argentina’s far-right president Javier Milei as an example for Canada and Amazon folks talking about using the cloud and data to justify massive austerity campaigns.
Then there’s the matter of dealing with pushback from within the federal government. “We have a public service union that is resistant to change and risk averse,” said Amazon’s Lukasheh.

But she speculated that cloud-based government spending technology would help in removing political roadblocks. “Imagine a scenario where a minister has an iPad or a dashboard in front of him looking at all the programs that exist in the department, what is under-leveraged, what’s over-subscribed, how much money is going to each program,” she said.

“And then you’re able to give yourself that political cover as well,” she added, “because when you’re justifying certain policies that you are principled on, you have the hard data that is present to back it up.”The pipeline company executive offered another example that could guide a Poilievre government should the Conservative Party defeat the current Liberal prime minister Carney — Javier Milei. The far-right president of Argentina, widely seen as an inspiration for DOGE, has fired tens of thousands of employees and slashed federal programs, helping drive up the poverty rate and pushing the country deeper into a recession.

“So, you know, Milei in Argentina has been very successful at… taking the chainsaw and eliminating things altogether,” Forestall said. Making large decisive cuts to government all at once is definitely the way to proceed in Canada, he added. “Because if you just chip away at it, one year later, it’s all back to where you started,” he said.
