There will never be enough quality candidates for a rightwing party if you make it a condition for entry that you sign up to a position that almost everyone earning above 70k disagrees with:

this is not going to happen. it’s outlandish and insane. consider it less a workable solution and more a statement of principles. in that spirit: I present the case for nationalising manchester city www.theguardian.com/football/202...

The Keminaissance is a myth. The Tories are still like a weird uncle.

‼️ A new paper with Patrick Fournier and @zeynsom.bsky.social is now out in @wepsocial.bsky.social! We examine citizens’ perceptions of parties that combine left/progressive stances on some issues with right/conservative stances on other issues - which we refer to as ideological inconsistency. 🧵

Voters’ perceptions of ideologically inconsistent parties
There is a growing consensus in party politics that new fault lines are emerging, and scholars increasingly characterise competition as multidimensional. In a multidimensional space, parties can ad...

Great piece from @stephenkb.bsky.social - with all the discussion on the party over the last few days I've gone back and forth on whether the Lib Dems should be doing better. On one hand I think there's a huge, largely untapped, market for the LDs (and liberals elsewhere) www.ft.com/content/f309...

V honoured to have my book mentioned in @stephenkb.bsky.social's brilliant Inside Politics! As Stephen says, some of the most loyal Lab and Con voters are the economically secure, many of whom may otherwise be Lib-Dem-curious - a major impediment to winning more support www.ft.com/content/7f92...

Industrial Policy Conditionality: A Guide for Users
Public debate treats conditionality as a single dial to be turned up or down to impose stricter discipline on private actors. That framing obscures the choices that actually matter.

Just think, they might get wiped out in Wales and most of their strongholds while getting shellacked in the marginals and turning a bunch of safe London seats *into* marginals!! Now to take a big sip of Darjeeling and check the local and devolved election results.

Even before this….let’s accept for a moment that Labour do have more to fear from Reform. Labour have done essentially everything that Luke and Morgan wanted and it hasn’t worked. It’s like saying the fact you have to win football matches validates Igor Tudor!

It's admittedly a professional obsession of mine but parties don't seem to realise how common this combination of positions really is among voters! (The problem is harnessing them, as they vote much less cohesively than voters on the traditional left/right, as the graph shows)
A graph showing the vote choices of 'market cosmopolitan' (i.e. socially progressive, fiscally conservative voters). Social liberals win around 17% support, conservatives/Christian Democrats around 32%, social democrats around 21%, Greens around 10%, the radical left around 5%, and the radical right around 15%.

This thread is mostly terrible for the Tories but honestly, 37% and a clear lead on “can deal with Britain’s economic problems” for the 2026 Conservative Party is just astonishing testament to the stickiness of people’s deepest assumptions about longstanding political parties
