Tu segui sempre i tuoi sogni! Non importa quali siano… Solo così sarai veramente felice!”
Il figlio guarda il padre confuso.
3
Dopo questo discorso, il figlio risponde: “Da grande voglio fare lo youtuber fascista!”
Il padre prende un secchio dell’umido, lo apre e dice al figlio: “Entra subito qui dentro.”

I just finished translating Lily Hoang’s A Bestiary. A book I’ve wanted to publish since 2018. I first came across it by chance, near a book swap, as happens with the best reads. It’s a book that turns pain into a poetic meditation on the complexity of modern life. Can’t wait to see it out in Italy.

Back from the Chennai Book Fair, and what a revelation the Tamil language has been, where letters are soul and body (uyir and mei), forming "embodied letters" (uyirmei). It was a beautiful encounter with a different way of dwelling in words.

Narrative voice oscillates between intimate interiority and expansive collective consciousness, suggesting alternative modes of perceiving individual experience as fundamentally interconnected and permeable. Theoretical intervention: reimagining subjectivity as ecological process.

Landscape functions not as backdrop but active phenomenological agent. Ecological intimacy becomes an epistemological method, deconstructing colonial subject/object binaries through immersive, sensorial narrative techniques that privilege processual becoming.

Performative textuality emerges through embedded musical/sonic metaphors. Piano preparation scenes literalize narrative's hybrid ontological mode - inserting external materialities into structured systems, generating unexpected resonances and transformative potentials.

Day's novel destabilizes linear subjectivity through Sarah Hutchinson's metamorphic consciousness, deploying a narrative structure that mirrors psychological fragmentation. Spatial transitions become metaphysical passages, challenging Western epistemological boundaries.

Gregory Day's "The Bell of the World" (Transit Lounge, 2023) interrogates spatial phenomenology through a polyvocal narrative, mapping embodied consciousness against the Australian landscape's transitional topographies. Formal fragmentation enacts phenomenological rupture and regeneration.

In the past two years alone I have translated 13 novels, all by terrific authors. But while completing Carolina Bello's El resto del mundo rima, I truly felt like a literary translator for the first time. I focused entirely on the text, setting aside concerns about my or the author's (amazing) voice

By refusing traditional narrative cohesion, Unnikrishnan performs a decolonial methodology, challenging not just representational politics but the very epistemological structures through which migrant experiences are conventionally understood and narrated.

Particularly compelling is how linguistic mutation serves as a theoretical framework: characters literally transform (becoming passports, suitcases) as a powerful allegory for how bureaucratic systems reduce human complexity to documentary abstractions.

The novel's fractured structure—oscillating between vignettes, interviews, and surreal narratives—mirrors the fragmented subjectivity imposed by transnational labor economies. Each narrative segment functions as a micro-resistance against linear, normative storytelling.

Unnikrishnan's text operates as a linguistic intervention, weaponizing magical realism not as exotic embellishment but as a critical hermeneutic for revealing the ontological violence of temporary worker systems. Metamorphosis becomes a metaphorical resistance against systemic dehumanization.

Deepak Unnikrishnan's Temporary People (Restless Books) skillfully deconstructs migrant labor through magical realism, transforming linguistic boundaries into a radical map of displacement and bureaucratic erasure. Its innovative narrative challenges conventional immigrant stories. #JustRead

Through strategic deployment of multilingual poetics, Mohabir demonstrates how queerness functions not just as identity but as methodology - a way of reading across languages, genres, and temporal boundaries to imagine new forms of belonging.

The thing about pre-orders: If you pre-order thru an indie bookstore (which generally doesn't cost you up-front!) it is HUGE for the lifeblood of the book, it is a boost to authors, the publisher, and the booksellers who steward this life. It's a little thing but it's meaningful should this inspire!
