I am an independent observer. I have been very publicly critical of SpaceX for years. I led a major public charge on this website to try to get the FCC to block SpaceX's AI satellite constellation.

You have dedicated the last ~decade of your life to crusading around the internet with your fake skepticism about this. Isn't it worth a trip to LA just to double check? Maybe use all those sales of your world-renowned books to cover the trip.

This was taken 4.74 miles away from the landing pad at the former site of Vandenberg SLC-4W. Specifically, here, in the parking lot of this Santa Barbara Farms facility at 1200 Union Sugar Avenue, Lompoc, CA, which if memory serves was immediately behind the launch roadblock.

Exclusion zone isn't six miles, at Vandy it's typically closer to five, and even if it were, six miles just isn't terribly far. This was Falcon 9 B1063 flying NAOS on 26 August 2025. This was actually the second time I'd seen this booster land in-person.

If you are actually sincere about this, I have exactly this, as do literally thousands upon thousands of others. I'd be more than happy to send you my footage of Falcon landings, from both close to the landing site and far enough away to see the entire trajectory.

to be fair, the website does say one person and not approved for public road use
Screenshot from Tesla website. "Rocket: Invite Only. Air ready with seating for one. Features a multi-mode suction system paired with cold-gas thrusters positioned around the perimeter of the vehicle that support forward and upward acceleration as well as lateral rotational movement. So yes, it can fly.¹
¹Note: Not approved for public road use. "

anything but HLS 😭
NASA administrator Jared Isaacman quote tweets Tesla from his personal account. The original tesla post displays the new prototype Roadster airborne under the power of its cold-gas thrusters. Tesla's caption reads "Real life, baby." Isaacman's quote tweet reads "Hard to think of a wilder product unveiling. Not sure how quickly drivers are going to be leaping over each other in traffic, but damn, this was a cool way to introduce Roadster to the world."

Through the next month, your donation will be matched, up to $1000, by our partners at Triad Magnetics. All of it goes to support our team of the most talented, dedicated young engineers I know. Any support would mean the world to all of us.

Clementine is now in early phases of testing, with our first tests of our igniter already completed and cold flow and hot fire testing of a full scale development engine coming soon. We've also been hard at work on TANGERInE, a liquid fueled development vehicle.

A bit about us: HSP built UCR's first ever liquid fueled rocket, Poseidon. Poseidon took first place in the A Altitude category in the 2025 FAR-OUT competition. Since then, we've been hard at work on Clementine, a much bigger rocket that will be regeneratively cooled.
The Poseidon rocket leaps into the air in 2025.

If anyone needs a good cackle I highly encourage you to check out www.morewrong.lol.
Homepage of morewrong.lol. Highlights the most recent post, titled "A Marginal-Utility Case for Stealing My Grandmother's Pain Pills." The teaser text for that post reads "A common objection to taking my grandmother's pain pills is that they are prescribed to her, stored in her home, and intended for her pain. All three observations are true but decision-theoretically incomplete." The post is by expected_value_grandson.
Other posts listed include: "A Bayesian Analysis of Whether my Girlfriend is Mad at Me," "Earning to Give and the Case for my Drinking Problem," and "Gay Son or Thot Daughter: A Decision-Theoretic Argument." Each is accompanied by an apparently AI-generated illustration. The "About" page of morewrong.lol, describing the life of purported author Gloria Regular. It reads:
Gloria attended Stanford, where she double-majored in Symbolic Systems and Plausible Deniability, with a minor in arbitrage opportunities between ethics review boards. Her senior thesis proposed an app that sold students six-minute assignment extensions at interest rates indexed to their parents’ FICO scores.

She entered Y Combinator with APR Casino, a vibe-coded payday-loan app whose borrowers could gamble their interest rate on a livestreamed roulette wheel. Users who landed on green received one interest-free week; everyone else rolled automatically into a 940% APR “Diamond Hands” repayment plan. The app charged a convenience fee when customers borrowed, repaid, defaulted, opened a push notification, or successfully uninstalled it. The pitch deck described defaults as “high-intent recurring engagement.”

APR Casino later pivoted into Rent-Seeking-as-a-Service: a browser extension that converted cookie banners into same-game parlays, tokenized children’s future screen time, and let landlords short individual tenants’ security deposits. Its only profitable quarter came from Gloria borrowing twelve dollars from the company to buy scratch-off tickets, then reporting the transaction as enterprise revenue.

Model performance aside, I find something kind of charming in using the latest extremely powerful AI to crack old Enigma transmissions that nobody ever got around to deciphering.
Tweet from @carterleffen reading: "Two days ago, GPT-6 Astra broke a yet unsolved German Army Enigma message from 1941. Amazingly Astra was able to autonomously:
-Search historical archives
-Compare uncertain letters
-Find contextual cues
-Build an Enigma simulator
-Write cryptanalysis code
-Run parallel experiments
-Recover the plaintext
-Cross-check the results"
Accompanied by an image of faded nonsense writing on yellowed graph paper.

And there are more subtle risks too — if we're in either the substantial or extreme AI driven growth scenarios outlined in this report out today from @anthropic.com, advanced semiconductor chips become even more valuable than they are today, which could say, lead to an invasion of Taiwan.

xkcd #675, where a stick figure says "yes, science is an open process in which a good idea can come from anybody. Yes, widely-believed tehoeries are ON OCCASION overturned by simple thought experiments. And yes, your philosophy degree equips you to ask interesting questions sometimes. But you did not just overturn Special Relativity, a subject you learned about an hour ago, with your 'racecar on a train' idea."

So many breathy articles have been written about this damn space station, not just in the IFLScience!es of the world, but in ostensibly real outlets like CNN and the Washington Post, when it was obvious from the beginning that this was never going to happen.

Checking in on this space hotel that was supposed to start construction this year, it appears that the company behind still exists at least on paper, but has launched...nothing. They show these Sierra Dreamchasers docked to it in a nonsensical configuration, which have also not flown.

Obviously everyone is thinking of Elon Musk but his promises are some of the least egregious examples of this. At least SpaceX is real and has giant rockets and can put people in orbit. The Voyager Station is probably the most egregious example of this.

What's jarring for me about Isaacman's official Twitter is the way he describes his role: "Serving President Donald J. Trump." He does not see/present himself as a public servant. He presents his role as simply an instrument through which Trump's will may be imposed.

Similarly, Falcons 9 and Heavy are basically the only functioning medium/heavy lift launch vehicles in the US right now. Atlas V is all sold out, Vulcan is in engine hell, Starship is Starship, and New Glenn, well...
A massive fireball resulting from the 28 May 2026 explosion of a New Glenn launch vehicle. The explosion destroyed the launch complex, rendering New Glenn grounded and the launch complex inoperable for the foreseeable future.
