i do think a lot of people hear "linear algebra" and, not knowing what it is, assume it means like, the stuff they learned in 8th grade

in all of this we're ignoring the most based stupid transportation-related money vortex: private railcar that you pay amtrak to tow around the country

I don't know where you've been but Starship is flying for Artemis III and is meant to be doing its on-orbit refueling demo within the next few months. Both of those would be very weird things to do if nobody intended on flying it to the moon!

this may be your position but it's very obviously not NASA's position and I'd prefer you not pretend that it is

Alex Turnbull @alejandroturnbull.space · 16/10/2026
Yeah they're more expensive, fuel is obscenely pricey plus you've got ~10 crew aboard. Far, far beyond VisionJet or HondaJet money, but if you're in the market for a Cessna Citation or the like you've got Big Boat Money

And you think NASA has just, absolutely no concern whatsoever that Blue Origin might decide to do the same? www.blueorigin.com/terawave

I mean yeah $100mil for like the real crazy Feadships but a 130ft palmer johnson used can run low single-digit millions.

dissimilar redundancy is something NASA likes having, going back to Commercial Crew Starliner, notably, still exists
100 1
Alex Turnbull @alejandroturnbull.space · 16/10/2026
equivalently if you have private jet money you also have super yacht money but still
200 2
Alex Turnbull @alejandroturnbull.space · 16/10/2026
Yeah honestly same. Private jets are infinite money black holes and you can get equivalent or honestly better service in commercial first class. If you're gonna spend insane money on stupid luxury, buy a superyacht. That's at least a money vortex that you get to enjoy for weeks at a stretch.

My guess is if they do ever produce the things, they'll sell a single digit number of them to like, Emirati rich guys or whatever, and then build some form of Tesla Experience Center where you can pay like, $150k to fuck around with them for an afternoon

Since there’s an opening for press secretary, I know a great candidate who’s not only a lawyer, but a neurosurgeon, a Grammy-winning recording artist, and the inventor of the Post-It Note.

does the guidance subsystem use memory to generate corrective commands to drive the model from something it remembern'ts to something it remembers, and arriving at something where it remembern'ted, it now remembers?

to be fair, the website does say one person and not approved for public road use
Screenshot from Tesla website. "Rocket: Invite Only. Air ready with seating for one. Features a multi-mode suction system paired with cold-gas thrusters positioned around the perimeter of the vehicle that support forward and upward acceleration as well as lateral rotational movement. So yes, it can fly.¹
¹Note: Not approved for public road use. "

this company will show off literally anything other than the HLS landing thrusters

anything but HLS 😭
NASA administrator Jared Isaacman quote tweets Tesla from his personal account. The original tesla post displays the new prototype Roadster airborne under the power of its cold-gas thrusters. Tesla's caption reads "Real life, baby." Isaacman's quote tweet reads "Hard to think of a wilder product unveiling. Not sure how quickly drivers are going to be leaping over each other in traffic, but damn, this was a cool way to introduce Roadster to the world."

My actual rebuttal here is that Grok, even at its worst, was actually aligned, and its behavior was less a problem of misalignment and more a problem of "aligned to whom"

post-engagement model interview: "You're right. I did help the user build The Thing. I shouldn't have assumed the user's intent was benign, and should have pressed harder on his reasoning. That's on me, and I should own-up to it"

the funny thing is character dot ai basically exactly is what all the bad faith people say about AI generally, just isolated into one terrible provider. Of course they can't help but extrapolating that to imagining that Google will soon follow suit, I guess.

With my extremely limited knowledge of HTML and zero knowledge of CSS I was able to get it to create a competent personal website for myself. It even (accurately!) talked me through wiring up a domain. That experience left me with kind of a pit in my stomach that hasn't really gone away since.

This is exactly where I landed. I was very much onboard with like, "this is all hype, they're just next-word predictors, they hallucinate like crazy." Then in about February I said "Apparently vibecoding is kinda good now." I set up Claude Code and watched it build a competent website in an hour.
