Don't let the bumpy world get you down. Enjoy the tranquil sight of Coniston Water this evening #tranquil #sunset #lakedistrict
Lake at sundown. Across the water is the silhouette of mountain, the Old Man of Coniston. The Sun has gone down behind the mountain. The sky still glows yellow above the mountain, shading into light blue higher up. There are leafy branches of foreground trees at upper right and left. Two ducks head towards a clump of reeds at the left edge. The light of the sky is reflected in the rippled water.Lake at sundown. Across the water at right is the silhouette of a mountain, the Old Man of Coniston, sloping down gradually to the left. The sky still glows yellow above the mountain, shading into blue higher up. The dark forms of the mountain and the trees along the far shoreline are reflected in the rippled water; below them the light of the sky.

As expected, the Prime Minister's promise to sort out the mess of funding for Jodrell actually meant nothing - it seems the government would like it to be some sort of heritage theme park when you can go and see where we used to do science. 🔭

A - mostly - forgotten contemporary of Kepler, nicely recalled. Incidentally it's interesting to see how familiar the postdoc life must have looked then, wandering the continent trying to find a position, hoping your biggest supporters will work things out for you

A scone and jam and coffee in an Emperor Frederick II mug from the gift shop of the Palazzo Reale in Palermo. Seems appropriate the morning after giving a talk about Michael Scot, Frederick's Court Astrologer
At left a blue side plate with a plain scone, sliced in two with margarine and blackcurrant jam on both hales. At right a mug with a reproduction on it of a medieval representation of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, seated on his throne, wearing a golden crown, red robes, royal blue stole, holding up a green leaf. Beside him is a falcon on its perch. He loved hunting with birds and wrote a pioneering, extremely learned book on falconry and the natural history of falcons

A beautiful, equinoctial morning in Linn Park, Glasgow this morning, Sun heading south, leaves beginning to fall. This poem, attached by @calligraphyoutside.bsky.social to a fence beside the path from the Snuff Mill Bridge, seemed to have sprung from the cusp between summer and autumn
Late summer morning light filtering through trees, still green and leafy but with lots of brown leaves now on the bank underneath them, to the right, and on the path at leftPoem by Emily Dickinson, 'As Imperceptibly as Grief', in beautiful handwriting on a laminated card, attached to a fence in a shady spot in Linn Park. At the top of the card we're told the Instagram and Blue sky accounts of @calligraphyoutside.bsky.social

It was a rather dull day, dry but cloudy (Scotland!). There are nicer photos than mine of the church and surroundings but here's a picture of the plaque on the wall of the kirkyard that states again how important Maxwell's work was for scientific understanding and for technology
plaque from the wall of Parton Church yard, commemorating "James Clerk Maxwell FRS, FRSE of Glenlair". It lists his positions: "Fellow of Trinity College Cambridge, Professor of Natural Philosophy at Aberdeen, Professor of Natural Philosophy at King's College London and first Cavendish Professor of Experimental Physics at Cambridge". Then, "His short life was rich in distinguished contributions to every branch of physical science - heat, light, mechanics. Above all, by unifying the theories of electricity and magnetism he established a sure foundation for modern Physics, Electrical Engineering and Astronomy and prepared the way for radio communication and television.

A good man, full of humour and wisdom. He lived in this area and is buried in the ruins of the old kirk in this curchyard."

We decided to make a wee pilgrimage with Don, to James Clerk Maxwell's grave in Parton. Any physicist would like to make this visit but just to underline its appropriateness, here are Maxwell's equations early on in Melrose's book
