It's not that easy to write a back-cover blurb for a dazzling book. But what this blurb suggests (and other similar ones, which repeatedly made the novel totally uninteresting to me) is very misleading. The book cover design and the critics' quotations (in aggregate) are definitely more helpful.

UC Berkeley Law creates new AI policy that bans AI for "conceptualizing, outlining, drafting, revising, translating, or editing any work submitted for credit" or exams because "thinking remains the sine qua non of good lawyering (and of a quality legal education)." That's what I'm talking about.
Rule:
The use of AI is prohibited for aid in conceptualizing, outlining, drafting, revising,
translating, or editing any work submitted for credit. AI use is prohibited for any use for
any purpose in any exam situation. Students may not upload course
materials—including assignments, readings, slides, class recordings, or other class
content—into generative AI systems. AI can be used for research on papers ONLY for the
limited purpose of identifying sources, such as cases, statutes, or secondary sources.
Students are responsible for the accuracy of their research and all other aspects of their
submitted work. Citations to sources that do not exist will raise a presumption of
prohibited AI use

I’ve always disliked large conferences bc they’re overwhelming. But I go for a number of reasons including my favorite: moments like this one where I found myself w a beloved colleague poring over the Medieval Academy Fellows’ book & squealing w delight as we got to the page w Panofsky’s signature.
A cropped photo so as not to show my colleague’s face but in it you see me and another person’s hand holding open the page with Panofsky’s signature.

It was a long-simmering and deepening dismay with what this post describes that motivated me and @cnygren.bsky.social to propose this as one of our four frictions. www.publicbooks.org/four-frictio...
Friction Two: Cultivate the moments between graded reckonings; slow down the momentum of “optimizing.” What we mean here are small acts of extracurricular and uncredited communion. Reading groups, lightning round presentations, unambitious programs of being in simple, un-CV-able conversations. These pauses alone will insist on humanity’s place in learning. And while these pauses themselves insist on the vitality of getting to think with one another without being subject to metrics and rubrics or succumbing to the thrall of their being against AI, we can also talk to our colleagues and students about our stance on it to show them that there are those who are skeptical.
