Recovering journalist in Fairbanks, Alaska. Love sled dogs, good coffee and long walks in the woods, preferably at the same time. Mixed emotions about the Oxford comma.

HERE IT IS! In August 2025, a massive landslide brought a big chunk of mountainside into the Tracy Arm fjord in Alaska, causing the second-largest tsunami ever recorded. My latest for @eos.org is the story of the forensic investigation, and why the culprit is climate change: 🧪

The Forensics of a Skyscraper-Sized Tsunami - Eos
A landslide in Tracy Arm Fjord in Alaska created the second-largest tsunami on record. A new analysis links this abrupt event to the retreat of a glacier and, ultimately, to climate change.

Fairbanks airport low temperature Wednesday morning of -41F (-40.6C) ties the record low for March 11, first set in 1930. This is the fourth day this month to tie the daily record low. No new record lows have been set (thus far, anyway). #akwx #weather #Climate @bikewritedave.bsky.social

I've seen this one pop up on other channels. I feel this message to the center of my freeze-dried shell of a heart. I think I'll bathe a dog to see if that jumpstarts mud season.

Fairbanks' streak of consecutive days with high temperature at or below 0F (-18C) ends at 32 days, the second longest on record and the longest since the winter of 1917-18. All the other top-ten longest streaks were set prior to 1980. #akwx #climate @leahwrenn.bsky.social @themattphelps.bsky.social

Fairbanks average temperature for 2025 of 30.1ºF/-1.1ºC tied for the 10th warmest year since 1930. There hasn't been a "top ten" coldest year in the 21st century, but half of the top ten warmest years have occurred since 2000. The typical year is now 3ºF warmer now than before 1960. #akwx #Climate

I’m such a fabulous gardener. I dug up the chives last fall and was so happy they stayed alive all winter. Added them every so often to scrambled eggs, etc. Yesterday I realized I was nurturing grass. Not chives. No wonder they tasted bland.
