I'm seeing several posts regarding luck versus skill. I do believe a lot of luck plays a part in publishing. What I would add to this equation is: the system. The thing is, you can have skill and luck can happen, but, to use a gambling metaphor, if you aren't allowed in a casino, you can't bet.

I’m researching cemeteries where ancestors are buried so I can visit one day. This one sounds like a trap: Not visible from road. Creepy woods. Go through gate that’s just past this random house. Go downhill until you see second gate. Go through it & no doubt get eaten by 2-300 year old skeletons.
