“Totoro”. Studio Gibli, Japan

Framed by the dark, silhouetted trunks of ancient trees and branches laden with vibrant magenta foliage, an enchanted woodland realm opens into a soft, luminous mist. In the foreground, perched upon an emerald-paved stone path, the small white forest spirit (Chibi-Totoro) and medium blue spirit (Chū-Totoro) sit side-by-side, their backs turned as they gaze toward the glowing horizon. Rising beyond the grassy knoll, the colossal, gentle form of the great forest guardian (O-Totoro) emerges, his immense slate-grey head and wide, inquisitive eyes peeking through the canopy. A hazy canyon and pale, layered mountain peaks drift in the background under a soft, dreamlike sky. The illustration evokes a magical sensory atmosphere: the cool, damp fragrance of moss-covered earth and spring leaves, the quiet whisper of mountain breezes through high boughs, the faint rustle of spirit footsteps along ancient stones, and the breathless, reverent awe of stepping into a hidden sanctuary of nature. Inspired by Studio Ghibli’s 1988 animated masterwork My Neighbor Totoro (Tonari no Totoro), directed by Hayao Miyazaki, this stylized artwork celebrates the film’s profound roots in Shinto animism and environmental reverence. Set in the lush, agricultural satoyama landscape of Japan’s post-war countryside, the narrative re-enchants the natural world by portraying kami—indigenous spirits that inhabit ancient camphor trees, rivers, and deep woodlands—as benevolent guardians accessible through the pure, unsullied imagination of youth. Studio Ghibli’s legacy of traditional hand-drawn animation embodies the spirit of monozukuri (artisanal mastery and devotion to material craft), where thousands of hand-painted cels and richly rendered background art celebrate the textures of rain, wind, and foliage.

Presumably, the Australian government will have been invited to be a signatory. Will anyone be surprised if such an invitation was declined given our deep complicity in Israel’s crimes.
