Poem, lyric essay, it's a continuum

I know there’s a lot right now. But folks need to understand what this means. A suspension this long would mean people living with HIV lose their medicine for months. People around the world lose their PrEP for months, putting millions at risk of getting HIV. Drug-resistant strains could emerge.

We don't see Vampires anymore because, with the advent of indoor plumbing, there are hidden networks of running water everywhere that they can't cross. They now seek refuge among the Amish.

This is the face of courage and compassion. Thank you Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde for speaking truth to power on behalf of the marginalized.

Oh no! We'll have to discuss the problems implicit in our systems?! Shock horror!!

You ever think that maybe the reason mobs in Minecraft don't spawn in lit areas is because they're really sensitive to light pollution?

It isn't an intentional "distraction" by the far-right, it's an intentional attack on trans people by normalizing hate on the biggest stage they have available to them. This is a main event.

If someone who's going to be the most powerful trans woman in the nation thinks trans (read human) rights don't count as real issues, then where are we?

One of my students chose Ursula K. Le Guin's story "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas" for discussion today. It always awes me that stories like this exist, and so many people still don't understand why this country needs radical change.

Same energy as us all being led to believe that quicksand would be much more of a problem than it is.

The Two-Headed Calf
by Laura Gilpin

Tomorrow when the farm boys find this
freak of nature, they will wrap his body
in newspaper and carry him to the museum.

But tonight he is alive and in the north
field with his mother. It is a perfect
summer evening: the moon rising over
the orchard, the wind in the grass. And
as he stares into the sky, there are
twice as many stars as usual.

While it might not be the Golden Age of Saturn, there's something so compelling about being taken to an Italy lush with forests and wolves. Our discussion of human impacts too often starts with the industrial revolution; it's easy to forget just how early we began to change our landscapes. #booksky

A picture of the novel Lavinia, by Ursula K. Le Guin. The cover shows a gilded laurel branch on a solid seafoam green background.

An excerpt of the afterword, written by the author, with an underlined and starred section that reads, "Where man goes, trees die; or, to paraphrase Tacitus, we make a desert and call it progress."
