Category theory lets you give common names to common abstractions. My favorite recent example is that database joins are actually matmuls (in einsum notation), one an abstract over boolean numbers, and the other over real numbers. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semirin... arxiv.org/abs/2509.22614

Have I ever mentioned online my idea for the “random access guild”? I thought of it at @cloudnativegeo.org’s conference last year. A neo union (tech guild) might be a better model for improving the material condition of workers, mediating worker IP, and training new entrants to the field at once.

The community of silicon valley remains durable to the ruggedness of late capitalism because it operates under a gift economy via angel investment/vc, and yes, probably also sex cults. escholarship.org/content/qt3d... Maybe, instead, we could take that community drive and empower workers.

If the workers of Ant, OAI, and GDM were all part of a union (e.g. a frontier AI guild), they could cooperate in ways that are illegal collusion for corporations. IMO, that would be a stronger alternative but achieve similar goals (slowdown for safety) of a cartel.

That different frontier models perform in the lead in agentic coding, depending on which benchmark you look at, means to me that one might want to see which benchmark reflects the work you typically do to choose the model family.

The current moment feels like we’ve all seized the means of production. With a $20/mo claude sub, I am actually providing a competitive quality database system to a venture backed startup. SWEs of the future might be like early Americans, where wage labor was a means to then work for yourself.

Getting excited about what I’ve been cooking up recently. These 3 lines of SQL, which look like the mathematical definition, are all you need to define the weight update rule for SGD. This is very close to the way you’d define it in JAX and Python. docs.jax.dev/en/latest/au...

I should try to figure out some sort of remote execution system for this like bazel. Hell, remote execution of my rust sources via bazel would probably quicken these build, break, fix loops. bazel.build/remote/rbe

Adversarial review works swimmingly well with fuzzing. I’ve added property based tests, metamorphic tests, other useful invariants and had an adv claude agent catch very hard to find bugs. Once the adversairy is in the mindset of simulation testing, it tends to come up with other very clever ideas.

The ultra wealthy pay a lower tax rate than firefighters and teachers. They should not get to live in their own society with their own rules. Wealth at this scale isn’t for security, it’s for power. A yes vote on 40 is a vote for democracy here and abroad.

Al Merose @al.merose.com · 26/09/2026
A yes vote on Prop 40 means a one time 5% tax on the wealth of the ~250 billionaires in CA, which will raise $100 billion to cover the healthcare budget shortfall from Trump’s tax cuts. It’s oligarchical that such a small tax on so few people would fill such a significant gap in our budget.

With a design doc and some project scaffolding, Opus 5.5 seems to be doing a great job at implementing auto grad inside a DB query engine. I gave a minimal prompt like “implement milestone 3 in this design doc” and “break up the change into small, self contained PRs” and I’m enjoying its work.
