I'm quite hopeful too, also that the judiciary will continue to rectify the egregious unlawfulness of the government.

100 years ago today, #OTD in 1925, Edwin Hubble announced that Andromeda and other spiral nebulae were definitely separate galaxies outside the Milky Way, in a paper read to an AAS meeting by H.N. Russell. There was no doubt that the Universe was more than just our little island of stars. 🧪 🔭 ⚛️
A black and white photo of M31, the Andromeda galaxy. It is characterized by spiral arms and dark lanes of dust and gas, with a bright center.

There are plenty of other resources as well. If you like video lectures then please let me know I shall direct you to that as well. Once you are more familiar with the basic ideas, then I'll be happy to recommend more advanced books. All the best! 😄

1. Special Relativity and Classical field theory by Leonard Susskind. 2. Spacetime physics by Taylor and wheeler (this has many interesting problems). 3. Feynman lectures volume 2. 4. For GR, you may wish to go through Sean Caroll's Geometry of Spacetime. 5. Space, time and Relativity by Wald

I am so happy to know that you are going to grad school for physics! It is always best to review the subject, especially when it comes to something as subtle as relativity. I have tons of favourite resources, but here are a few I really liked!

A new claim that dark energy isn’t necessary, we just need to properly account for inhomogeneities in the universe. Maybe. But his idea has been discussed for a long time - David Wiltshire, an author here, has been pushing it for 20 years, and others have also looked at it. (1/n)

Happy birthday to #mathematician & #astronomer Johannes Kepler (1571-1630)! 🐡🧪🔭🧮 #histsci We remember him for his role in the Scientific Revolution & his 3 laws of planetary motion in particular. His laws modified Copernicus’ heliocentric model; he replaced the circular orbits with elliptical ones &
My linocut portrait of Johannes Kepler on cream coloured washi paper. Kepler is in Renaissance garb printed in indigo. He holds a compass and rests his hand on his model of nested Platonic solids from Mysterium Cosmographicum, printed in gold ink. Above that in silver in are 7 musical staves with notes next to symbols for related planetary bodies: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Over his other shoulder are 3 schematic diagrams drawn in ellipses (oriented with the semi-major axes horizontal) in magenta. The top one relates to his first law and shows an ellipse cut in two horizontally, the two foci labelled F and F’ and a triangle drawn to a point P on the ellipse (FPF’). The middle ellipse (2nd law) shows the Sun at a focus, and a series of circles on the ellipse as a planet such that the sections are equal area and alternate colouring (magenta or none) like a peppermint. The bottom ellipse (3rd law) is cut in half with semi-major and semi-minor axes shown

Albert Michelson, pioneer of optical interferometry, was born #OTD in 1852. Michelson refined measurements of the speed of light, failed to find evidence of the aether, and developed a method that now underlies gravitational wave detection. 🧪 ⚛️ (1/n) Photo: “Practical Physics,” Millikan & Gale
