If you're in DC, you should go to this. (There's a link to register in the first reply.) I can't make it, so my colleague Michael Brodrick is hosting the conversation, but @uncanonical.net and I recently talked with Berkowitz for my other show, and he was great, and his book an important one.

It is somewhat amusing that this William Gibson audiobook ends with a publisher's note that it may not be used to train AI.

I've written a bit about the leftwing version of defaulting to villain-driven quasi-conspiracy frames, but the psychological tendencies apply to the right in important ways too. www.econlib.org/stop-moraliz...

It's also hard to metabolize that your perception of reality isn't shared because of emergent social forces, not cleanly identifiable villainous actors. Just as true for some leftwing views as for right-wing culture wars. Liberty upsets patterns. Not everything is propaganda or false consciousness.

It turns out that organic, emergent society forms societal attitudes and habits much more than formal institutions. Ironic for conservatives not to see that culture and civil society that make younger generations progressive, or reactionary, or anything else. Not a boring guy like Herbert Marcuse.

I’ve always liked how the mountains, forest, and reflections seem to share the same space in this painting. Even though everything is still, there’s a feeling that the landscape is quietly alive. #206 "Emerald Reflection" Hand Painted by Jeff Dillon, 24" x 30" #MountainLandscape #CanadianLandscape

Can someone do a mashup of Mulan and Fiddler featuring the song "I'll Make A Mensch Out of You"? One of many random thoughts my brain is supplying this afternoon. You are invited to suggest lyrics for this.

Imagine how your air travel would be if you had to buy tickets through your employer, with your employer’s permission, from a list of airlines and flights that your employer chose for its own reasons. That would be a crazy system, and it’s also a lot like American healthcare.

This is a phenomenal essay from @jkuznicki.bsky.social and one of the very best pieces I've ever read on nationalism, meaning, and the stories we tell ourselves. My only criticism is that I wish it were longer. I highly recommend people check it out.

If you want great in-depth analysis of why Hazony’s ideas boil down to blood and soil nationalism, I highly recommend the work of @paulmatzko.bsky.social and @akivamalamet.bsky.social in this thread. If you’re guarding your heart, I can give you the Cliff’s Notes at @theunpopulist.net:

Highly recommended, and not because Aaron is a friend (or my multiple appearances). RL is an unusually deep, reflective, charitable, and wide ranging space for important conversations on the past, present, and future of a free and open society from the philosophical to the highly applied.

Listening to @ezraklein.bsky.social’s interview of Yoram Hazony and struck by the fact that Hazony isn’t just bad at nationalism; he’s also bad at understanding his faith. His scriptures are filled with outsiders being grafted into tribes by acts of faith and creedal commitment (e.g., Ruth, Rahab).
