it'd be easier to take Kos' social research seriously if it could agree on how many pillars it is based off.

Call it the NACCification of public services. It's the Secret but for government - announce a service and hope the universe delivers it. Today marks the start of Thriving Kids, a NDIS complement in the works since December 2023. What does it offer in the ACT? A phone number to call.

It's impossible to take the Australian Government seriously when one week they'll talk breathlessly how AI will be a revolution in productivity, then the next week panicking and claiming Medicare got hacked because an agent accessed some public data through a public portal.

It assumes some of it would, yes. It's an estimate - more rubbery than estimates of changes in expenses, but not worthless. From Treasury's tax expenditure report:

The claim that super doesn't save the Budget money is 100% support by the Treasury's modelling, which shows the saving to the Age Pension is dwarfed by the foregone tax revenue.

And if something is crucially important... then take a lot of equity and run it yourself or via a PPP.

Hear about the latest industry bailout. "Subsidy, loan or equity?" "It's sensible policy sir" Look inside. It's a subsidy.

(of course the AFR still can't do maths or think big thoughts - the report in no way suggests that 40% of NDIS participants could pay their own way)

akayea.bsky.social @akayea.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
The report is so powerful it's even convinced the AFR that means testing the NDIS is probably not a good idea
130
akayea.bsky.social @akayea.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
Why is the savings so low? Because two thirds of NDIS spending goes to families with zero taxable income -- because they're on DSP
162
akayea.bsky.social @akayea.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
And where is that 12 per cent saving found? From autistic children, basically.
171
akayea.bsky.social @akayea.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
Their conclusion? NDIS funding goes overwhelming to low-income earners; which means that if you applied an Age Pension-style means test you'd kick off 40 per cent of participants but only reduce spending by 12 per cent.

the best reason to do a new version of VtM at this point, in 2026, for a near-dead franchise, that just saw it's best shot at redemption go down in flames due to Paradox mismanagement, would be to get rid of the albatross of the very dumb VtM lore

Love to see our cognitive elite put out a product with immediate obvious flaws such as running their AI over every single article stub the Guardian has ever put out and complained that political cartoons and blog episode descriptions don't include links and sources.

serious centrism is when you cut people's pensions but then loan them the money back via a concessional loan to be paid from their estate

part of the problem with talking about australia's social welfare scheme is that it is so very complex. which leads to claims like this on a random johnmenadue . com article, claiming that private hospital insurance doesn't cover in-hospital medical services

Pondering what to expect in the budget, turning to the ALP's election commitments for a guide, reminded that by far the biggest policy the ALP had was cuts to the public service.

This report is maddening. The RC spent so much time going through and debunking the notion of "averaging as a last resort". But here, the NACC just takes the evidence of people obviously motivated to repeat the line, and "averaging as a last resort" exists!

I can see how you could argue it's a degree in the language - the presentation is from earlier in the process, has hedging language, etc., and the report isn't forthright in saying world is fukt, but the RC's view was that reading between the lines of the report it's clear there are major problems
