Yeah, we've been saying this to the LLM crowd for years, but most wanted to say it is misspecification, as if you can fully specify away from every failure, or that it is misalignment, as if it wasn't doing what it was told, in ways you didn't want. (But "specification gaming" seems mostly right.)

Specification alone doesn't always seem to be enough even for seemingly well defined problems like in math. The real world is far less constrained. Alignment research hopes that LLMs will learn some general concept of 'doing the right thing', but we really need more dialogue with policy people.

I feel like people are still not familiar with Goodhart's law and how challenging reward hacking has been in RL. The lessons exist from long before LLM agents existed and makes all this loop-hole-seeking behaviour far less surprising.

A point on attribution worth highlighting: since our LLMs connect ideas from past scientific work, we explicitly cite the papers that inspired their contributions.

This one could be a thesis! Probing dark matter signatures with an RL agent that sets the stage for swarms of LLMs. The framework connects software from across particle physics & cosmology, proposes interesting observables! We combine inference-aware approaches with NSBI to create learned categories, then apply parametric statistical inference. It works just as well as full NSBI for an off-shell Higgs analysis, the very analysis for which NSBI was introduced in ATLAS!

RL is used to search through unintuitive phase spaces, including for particle model building. But running forward simulations is expensive & traditional RL only receive 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀. CDRL uses physics reasoning to prune swathes of uninteresting search space!

For my latest @nature.com piece, I talked to Ryan Rising, who is trying to build a prison-to-academia pipeline, informed by his own experience in incarceration. "At the core of my work is a simple idea: the people who are most affected by a problem are the ones closest to its solution."

The day a statistics student showed me the first concrete results empirically disproving a long-held belief across particle physics about the optimality of our core statistical method. Turns out, our optimality guarantees made unrealistic assumptions, and a better method is actually possible!
