Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion skeletons in Jason and the Argonauts are amazing even now. He animated the sequence by himself for more than four months -- without computers or even an easy way to check his work. We're looking into how he did it: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/how-ray-ha...

Early Cartoon Network was hugely inspired by the UPA animator Bobe Cannon. Artists like Genndy Tartakovsky loved his style of movement, studied it and put it in their work. We're looking into Cannon's methods and how they shaped these shows: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/the-animat...

A modified photo of a train station platform. It shows a platform with a yellow line on the ground as well as rails. In a very subtle transparency, a Regio 2N train can be seen overlapping the picture, as well as a photo of the Seine, whose skyline shows a bridge, is aligned with a shadow area in the platform photo. A white square frame surrounds a part of the photo where the train image is located. This frame displays more vivid colors than the rest of the photo. Text is written above the white frame as well as below it. We can read "NOW I KNOW RETURNING HERE" at the top of the square and "AIN'T JUST HARD DESPITE MY FEAR" below it.

I experienced this all of my life and never knew this was an autistic thing. This is extremely exhausting. It feels like it never ends. Is there ways to make it stop ? The way I see it, I always assumed that managing sensitivities and all the mental rigidities could help. But where to start ?

If you’re ND, you might have what we call Delayed Emotional Response It’s a reaction to an event that occurs in the present, but the emotional responses are not felt/expressed until some time later. It *can be* associated with trauma but also can simply be part of autistic traits #ADHD #Autism

Some of these factors are outside of our control. Other's we can change with more or less difficulty. If we don't like an action that we've taken, assessing these influences on our behaviour can help us identify whether we can change it and how go about doing so.

Behaviour does not occur in isolation. Internally, behaviour is affected by our goals, values, thoughts, feelings, and even bodily sensations. Externally, behaviour is affected by the situation, environment, social structures, and even social power.

If you ask me, the hardest part of accommodating the way your neurodivergent brain works isn't finding the strategies or tools. It's learning to accept that you need the strategies or tools and that it doesn't change your value as a person

I've been convinced to crosspost. The history of autism and autism diagnoses was quite fascinating to me. It really gives some insight to why we face the misconceptions and misunderstandings we do

Why is autism difficult to define?
(Part 1: Introduction and History)

What is autism, in the first place?
The definition of Autism Spectrum Disorder sounds simple enough. It can be described as a neurodevelopmental condition that impacts how the individual experiences and navigates their physical and social environment.

However, autism is not best described as a linear spectrum.
(Image of a rainbow spectrum from less autistic to more autistic)

Instead, it can be imagined as varying levels of traits and needs in a colour wheel.
(Image of a colour wheel with different autistic traits on it)
It’s hard to decide what should even go on this wheel!
This wheel is giving “graphic design is my passion”

However, how we understand autism has evolved rapidly and become more complex. It’s no surprise that some misconceptions arise.

“You can draw a straight line from the initial descriptions of many conditions – claustrophobia, for example, or vertigo – to their diagnostic criteria.

Not so with autism.”

The shifting focus of autism

1943-1965:
Extreme autistic aloneness and insistence on sameness
Leo Kanner identified a unique psychological disorder in children which he reduced to two key elements: “extreme isolation” and obsessive“ insistence on sameness”. Other traits that he identified but considered secondary or non-specific included: sensory hypersensitivity, poor motor skills, delayed echolalia.
1960–1980:
Language & other perceptual/cognitive abnormalities
By contrast, autism researchers in the 1960s and 70s argued that autism was the inability to develop a normal use and understanding of language together with sensory issues caused by cognitive defects. The social issues and resistance to change were considered secondary.
1980-2013: Deficits in social cognition and instinct
Lorna Wing defined autism through the triad of social and language impairment, which included restricted interests and repetitive behaviours. She introduced the concept of the autistic spectrum. Asperger’s Syndrome was introduced into the DSM IV in 1994.

For any neurodivergent condition, the goal cannot be cure, escape, or preventing it impacting our lives. The goal must be to accept it as a part of us, and to take it into account when we're setting our goals, working towards them, or celebrating our progress and success along the way

Reminder that your art doesn’t have to get you anything or have monetary value. You can just make it because you enjoy it and never post it online for engagement dopamine. It can be something that’s yours, for you. Even if you’re the only person who likes it, It can be just as important if others do
