If you’re ND, you might have what we call Delayed Emotional Response It’s a reaction to an event that occurs in the present, but the emotional responses are not felt/expressed until some time later. It *can be* associated with trauma but also can simply be part of autistic traits #ADHD #Autism

Why is autism difficult to define?
(Part 1: Introduction and History)

What is autism, in the first place?
The definition of Autism Spectrum Disorder sounds simple enough. It can be described as a neurodevelopmental condition that impacts how the individual experiences and navigates their physical and social environment.

However, autism is not best described as a linear spectrum.

Instead, it can be imagined as varying levels of traits and needs in a colour wheel.

It’s hard to decide what should even go on this wheel!
This wheel is giving “graphic design is my passion”

However, how we understand autism has evolved rapidly and become more complex. It’s no surprise that some misconceptions arise.

“You can draw a straight line from the initial descriptions of many conditions – claustrophobia, for example, or vertigo – to their diagnostic criteria.

Not so with autism.”

The shifting focus of autism

1943-1965:
Extreme autistic aloneness and insistence on sameness
Leo Kanner identified a unique psychological disorder in children which he reduced to two key elements: “extreme isolation” and obsessive“ insistence on sameness”. Other traits that he identified but considered secondary or non-specific included: sensory hypersensitivity, poor motor skills, delayed echolalia.
1960–1980:
Language & other perceptual/cognitive abnormalities
By contrast, autism researchers in the 1960s and 70s argued that autism was the inability to develop a normal use and understanding of language together with sensory issues caused by cognitive defects. The social issues and resistance to change were considered secondary.
1980-2013: Deficits in social cognition and instinct
Lorna Wing defined autism through the triad of social and language impairment, which included restricted interests and repetitive behaviours. She introduced the concept of the autistic spectrum. Asperger’s Syndrome was introduced into the DSM IV in 1994.
