I picked up a Martin Amis novel based on a blurb saying @aidantruhen.bsky.social's PRICE YOU PAY sounded like "Amis on mescaline" and while I enjoyed what I read of the Amis & will probably get back to it, it turns out the mescaline was a key ingredient (in this case) (for me)

What he's thinking is that maybe when you're looking at T-Rex hands... surely sometimes they are attached to a fucking T-Rex. So I sit there and I let him think his maybe until someone steps between us, and then I walk away so that when he looks again I'll be gone.

The thing is that when you write stories about stuff, people always assume that you know about it, that you feel it, that on some level you have connections. And my stories are not the kinds of stories where you would want the kind of person who knows those kinds of things to be unhappy with you.

There is no redemption arc for this asshole is what I'm saying. He is just what he is. Maybe one day he will suffer some kind of setback in life and go to a monastery and the abbot will say "child you are an asshole and that's why this has happened" and he will fix himself. But probably not.
