This AM I got an email from a-techo.org offering to pay $1,500/manuscript for expedited reviews. It's hard to imagine any serious journal editor taking them up. One has to figure that there's an implied quid pro quo, and manuscripts that are expeditiously desk rejected wouldn't get the payola.

Interesting to look at the replies and see that Canadians can be blinded by jingoism too (and Europeans). Nothing about this post is a slight on anybody else, so it's funny to pop in as if it is. But if you think your country or region is up to the task of making up for a US dropoff: No it is not

This strikes me as insightful and addressing the issue, at least to some extent. Incentives very much geared toward independence and redoing or very incrementally changing some stuff and missing others due to lack of systemically addressing issues.
020
Aidan Wright @aidangcw.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
Yeah I mean I guess I sort of boils down to that. Though what is “good” will depend on eye of beholder. But I guess the gripe is more about publishing more useful non-important stuff. Maybe that’s not the right framing. But what I see are a lot of unimportant AND unuseful stuff.

Aidan Wright @aidangcw.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
Yeah there’s some of that for sure.

Aidan Wright @aidangcw.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
I like this idea! The thought I’ve often had is that we don’t need more papers to fill in all the little gaps, but we do need some formal Mechanism to get the data/results out there. Incentives would remain an issue, but having an outlet would help in addressing that.

Only with the too much publishing, but not with the need to have more research on many topics that we don't understand fully.

I don't like word limits and I don't like papers that are unnecessarily long. I contain multitudes.

Aidan Wright @aidangcw.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
This tension comes up in how often we each bemoan more publications AND how often we say, "Yeah, not sure, nobody has looked at that yet" referring to some specific question someone asks us.

Aidan Wright @aidangcw.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
I'll be honest, I desk reject a lot. I often think I won't have any friends left at the end of my term. But this is only (barely, if at all) addresses too much publishing, it doesn't address the fact that other stuff needs to get published.
020
Aidan Wright @aidangcw.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
One thing I struggle with is the fact that we seem to publish way too much as a field, and yet there are so many things that are left unexplored. Or things that need to be tested for generalizability and robustness. Not sure entirely sure how to balance these competing demands.

Some listening at home might say, well what about HiTOP, that’s a statistical model of psychopathology. Good question, but the answer is no, not in the same way. It’s a quantitative approach not one model & the goal is more modest, to identify structural elements of psychopathology, not a new theory
120
Aidan Wright @aidangcw.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
Nothing makes me think you didn’t do your homework more than saying you have a new model of psychopathology that is framed as a particular statistical model. Psychometricians generally make poor psychopathologists. Not that some aren’t hubristic enough to think otherwise.
120
Aidan Wright @aidangcw.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
I love thinking about how we can better articulate psychopathology using quantitative models. But, I much prefer a paper that says “people have been thinking about this for a long time, and here’s a model that might be a good fit” vs one that shouts “here’s our new model of psychopathology!”

Aidan Wright @aidangcw.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
Thanks for sharing that! I was familiar with the target paper but somehow missed the commentary. I agree. I once gave a talk at SRP titled “Why I prefer a 70yo theory to modern alternatives” talking about interpersonal theory, which Harry Sullivan birthed. Key point, the ideas were always there.

Exciting day. My set-theoretic reconceptualization of the DSM (w/ MDD, GAD, and PTSD as empirical examples) is out today in JPCS, along with four invited commentaries and my response. I'm biased, but I recommend all six papers. I was really jazzed by all four commentaries. 1/25

When you combine multilevel and structural equation modeling, they become the most flexible version of the general linear model, and I would argue a necessary tool if you are working with multivariate intensive longitudinal data, which is now often the case in behavioral sciences. 2/
