It’s Banned Books Week, and I had to unsubscribe from a Google alert for my wife’s name because her beautiful book was so frequently showing up in banned book lists. It’s a non-fiction book for kids about gender. Inclusive of all kids. Not just trans kids, all kids. www.amazon.com/dp/125030295...

"Oh this JT had some zany ideas that stuck in the craw of librarians everywhere". Like... "McMastergate" (ffs really) wasn't about a guy trying to mix up professional practice and make a statement about the value of an MLIS. He was gutting staff and practicing toxic neoliberalism.

I dunno man but I find essays about why we can’t agree as exhausting as the disagreement. And I think any article that starts with “this guy was controversial for this one slide” is pretty dismissive of the labour bloodbath that followed it.

It seems notable to me that all the claims and suggestions for "future proofing" the library revolve around capitulating to the whims and desires of CEOs or institutional Presidents rather than the one thing that can actually protect the library: securing stable, permanent funding.

Somewhere along the lines of “we must always defend academic freedom” we missed some subtext around good/bad-faith. They shouldn’t be protected equally.

acabforcutie @ahemnason.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
In a pretty fun way, this is a nice parallel to “bad-faith journals” (I don’t use “predatory”, because major publishers are predatory)… you’ve got scads of researchers missing the scam part entirely. They’re not publishers the same way bad faith ghouls aren’t academics. It’s window dressing.

acabforcutie @ahemnason.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
I keep saying this over and over but academia does not know how to deal with bad faith actors, and I suspect some measure of McCarthy-era academic freedom haze is a major part of the problem. If you trust that the system is good at hiring people, and that guardrails are in place, trust is inherited.

I don't think making conclusions based on the publicly available data is "spreading lies". I think it's a bad-faith position to suggest that only someone who has every fact that exists no matter how much it costs to get it can be the only arbiter of salient criticism of the publishing industry.

I think it’s so telling that this ghoul thinks lowering emissions is a “short term goal” that “isn’t sustainable” when we know both how little time we have and also how unsustainable the status quo is.

I think it would be possible to not exist in a constant thrum of worry and depression about the very clearly spiralling climate situation if literally any politician gave like 5% of a shit about it. I could say the same thing about the cost of living. Or genocides. Or tech regulation.

So much so, the anonymous finance worker admitted, that his firm now actively avoids seeking out AI-literate STEM graduates, and opts to comb through humanities students instead.

And then I can hear the like “stuff like this is just a bug. They’ll work it out.” No. They won’t. They have no incentive to do that, for one. And also, knowing who Max Planck is would require *understanding*, and an LLM does not “understand”. It can’t. It literally cannot.
