Rapid adaptation and extinction in synchronized outdoor evolution experiments of Arabidopsis
Climate change forces species to adapt rapidly to avoid extinction. To directly observe rapid adaptation and extinction, we conducted synchronized evolution experiments with Arabidopsis thaliana in 30...

Our key message: genetic diversity is the lifeline 🔑 Rare species with small, low-diversity populations are poorly equipped to cope with climate change. Preserving biodiversity isn't just ethical — it's evolutionary insurance.

But in the hottest, driest sites populations didn’t evolve directionally — they showed random genetic drift and went extinct 💀 Extreme heat shrank population sizes, pushing them past an evolutionary tipping point. Without genetic diversity, there’s no rescue.

Most populations adapted rapidly via natural selection 🧬 Genomic changes were repeatable across similar climates — including genes tied to drought tolerance and flowering time. Evolution happened amazingly fast: within 3–5 years.

We planted genetically diverse Arabidopsis thaliana populations in 360 plots across Europe, the Mediterranean & North America — including our site on Lesvos Island 🇬🇷 For 5 years, we collected tissue samples annually & sequenced whole genomes. No intervention — just “evolve or die” 🌱

🌿 Evolution in fast-forward: can plants adapt in time to survive climate change? Our new study out today in Science tracked real-time evolution across 30 sites worldwide — from the Alps to the Negev Desert 🧵

Non-Native Flora of the Mediterranean Lesvos Island (East Aegean, Greece): Floristic Analysis, Traits, and Assessment
A checklist of Lesvos Island’s non-native vascular flora is presented. Through the literature and a roadside survey, we recorded 187 non-native plant taxa, representing 12% of the total regional flora...

hey everyone! i made a list of some useful starter packs (primarily biology/earth sciences with a few bonus things thrown in) to share with friends who have joined bsky in the last week and thought it may be useful for some people here too! 🌍🧪 #SciSky #BioSky docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Invasive alien species are a threat to #nature, nature’s contributions to people, and good quality of life. Read the @ipbes.bsky.social #InvasiveAlienSpecies Report at: www.ipbes.net/ias 🧪🌍
An infographic detailing facts about the impacts of invasive alien species from the IPBES Invasive Alien Species Report. The infographic also depicts images of various different invasive alien species such as the grey squirrel, alexandrine parakeet and red fox.

Agree, but is this a minority opinion between scientists? Always thought impact-criterion as just a managerial view
