In traditional folklore, the October full moon is known as the Badger Moon. Badgers use this bright moonlight to forage, cut dry grass or bracken with their teeth, and turn over their bedding bundles outside their dens to dry them before winter. #Folklore #FullMoon #Badgers #OriginalArt

Dahlia. I was going to make this monochrome, but the subtle pinks, green stems and cobalt blue glass were doing too much compositional work to throw away. Colour as composition. Nikon D800, Nikkor-S Auto 50mm f/1.4. #photography #stilllife #nature #flowers #dahlia
Two pale cream dahlias emerge from a deep black background, one large bloom lower left and a smaller flower above and to the right. Their petals carry very subtle pink tones toward the centres. Dark green stems descend into a ribbed cobalt-blue glass vase, which is only partly revealed by the light. The lighting is soft and directional, giving the petals gentle modelling while leaving most of the surrounding space in darkness.

Egret at the Water’s Edge This image of a snowy egret (sc9ientific name) turned out a lot better than I thought it would. The photographs here don’t appear as vivid as in my Pixel’s gallery. To load them here, I reduce their size and slightly lower their quality. swede1952-photographs.pixels.com
"A snowy egret stands in shallow water at the edge of a quiet shoreline, its white feathers glowing softly in the gentle light. The bird’s long black legs sink lightly into the rippled surface, ending in bright yellow feet that look almost painted against the muted colors of the water. Its slender neck curves gracefully, leading to a sharp black beak that points forward with alert focus, as if the egret is listening for the faintest movement beneath the surface.

The water around it is calm, reflecting pale tones of sky and sand. Behind the egret, the background blurs into soft shapes — distant sandbars and smooth water merging into a peaceful, almost dreamlike scene. The bird appears still and self‑contained, a quiet presence in a quiet place, poised between motion and rest." - Microsoft Copilot

UK pet owners risk being ripped off by private equity firms as vet ownership rules change. CMA says vet firms don't need to disclose their ultimate owners. Why not? Why is ownership by PE to be obscured? Pet owners pay 16.6% more on average at large vet groups than at independent practices.

Skimming the Line Every fall I stop by Gulfport, Mississippi, where thousands of black skimmers (Rynchops niger) dot the shoreline — resting in dense flocks on the sand or swirling through the air in loose, shifting formations. These four were out fishing.
"Four black skimmers sweep low across the surface of the ocean, their long wings stretched wide like narrow blades cutting through the air. Three of the birds fly in a tight line, each with its bright orange bill angled downward so the elongated lower mandible just grazes the water. As they move, that lower bill acts like a fingertip tracing a line across the sea, creating tiny ripples that shimmer and break the smooth surface.

Their bodies are sharply patterned — black above, white below — so the contrast feels almost graphic, like ink brushed over bright paper. The fourth skimmer follows just behind the trio, flying slightly higher, its bill lifted clear of the water. It seems to be pacing them, matching their rhythm but not yet dipping down to feed.

The ocean beneath them is calm, reflecting soft light and carrying the faint disturbances made by their skimming. The birds’ wings beat in steady, synchronized strokes, giving the whole scene a sense of coordinated motion — a procession of precision and grace moving across a quiet stretch of sea." - Microsoft Copilot
