Me (to the children huddled around the fire we built in a tire rim in the back corner of the burnt out shell of drone-struck super-Walmart): we used to have so much food in this country people would destroy it on video just for attention

In retrospect, of course "watching the mad undead emperor rot in front of us" was always the most likely Warhammer 40k event to Really Happen

Please dear god when the wheels come off the AI bubble and everything officially Goes To Shit in like 4-8 months, please don't be stupid enough to blame the newly elected Democratic congress, America. Please god.

Can of black beans, an onion, a carrot, a cup of rice. Little bit of vinegar and a bag leaf if you are fancy. Some cheddar cheese and hot sauce if you just got paid. Food.

We stopped buying our seeds from fedco in Maine and started buying them from Southern Exposure (mostly) here in the Philly Burbs. Better climate match now.

The constant question of 2026: "Is this a bit or have things gotten this stupid?" Like if there is a nuclear war I am gonna be like "wow, commitment to the bit, yo" as I watch the bombs explode.

Listen, I probably shouldn't do fashion criticism as a filthy flannel dweller... but is the lady in the red dress about to play a little football? Is she wearing some kind of jetpack? The shoulder line going on there is *weird*

What else is in there? What isn't in there? I think it's increasingly difficult to assert there isn't anything in there besides what's already encoded in our explicit symbols. I think asserting (as AI companies would) that all "intelligence" is in there is at least premature. Probably wrong.

This raises interesting questions about @tedunderwood.com's formulation of "the latent space" of language/culture as the thing mapped/recorded by LLMs. Like what's in there? Looks like probably a bunch of math. Makes sense, math is a kind of language, latent math hiding between the explicit math. OK

It turns out all Star Wars needed to become Good Again was the Real Life Fall of The Republic (this is about the moment in Zero Company after you-know-what when your soon-to-be ex-friend says you-know-who just needs a "public show of compliance" and then everything will be OK)

Oversight of the admin is only half the job. Breaking the back of the ultra-rich's power, especially the tech bros, (Peter Thiel first, then the rest of them) is the other half. Maybe more than half.

The thing is, we already had an abundance of information and a scarcity of attention. The LLM has been marketed as an efficient way to create information, which is exactly what we don't need. They can also sort and filter information, which is much less sexy, but actually (with care) useful.

This is all very speculative at this point but it was interesting to me that the recent fox poll had Talarico ahead by I think 7 points among RVs and only 3 among LVs, which suggests there might be potential D voters in TX waiting to be energized by a sense the state is in play & their vote counts

One of the more intangible things I think we will find we have lost in the last 10 years is the consensus that the Will of The People is the only legitimate source of political power that was so strong even those who planned on running authoritarian systems still called their countries "republics"

Once the hyperscaling crash (which is coming, I am pretty sure) wipes out the "we're gonna build God" contingent and we can deal with AI as the next-generation search engine and code-compiler it actually is (which is a big deal BTW) we can work out learning rights. Probably. Might take a century.

Because without authors, the copying machine owners would have nothing to copy in short order. The machine learning machine owners, at least some of them, at least some of the time, recognize they have the same problem. At least the ones who understand they aren't building God.
