This doesn’t lessen the emotional or moral questions of violence but I do think it creates space to have more productive conversations about them. One way or another the status quo was rendered not available as a source of legitimacy and so struggle is required to form a new one etc

I’ve definitely had success asking students to really interrogate “legitimacy” as something that needs to be fundamentally reconstructed in historical revolutionary contexts. Kneejerk reaction about violence as illegitimate, however understandable, ignore the total lack of legitimacy available.

Also worth noting that this kind of control is just as materialist as profit motive is. Some bosses (and Bosses) care that you agree with them, but they all want your compliance in a way that is manifested in real material living and working conditions.

It’s important to be able to critique and debate past strategies, and also “Woke 1” isn’t some magic passphrase that lets you indulge in your most reactionary tendencies. Working on comms and political ed strategies isn’t the same as a license to abandon your principles and we need to remember that.

Hanging out on porches with a morning coffee or evening nightcap, going for walks where you seem engaged and alert, being seen visiting with/talking to neighbors all makes it look like a less inviting space to attempt something. A block where you never see anyone is the real inciting problem.

I’ve started thinking about this akin to improving transit conditions, i.e. that the only real fix for “anti-social” behavior is an influx of “social” behavior. Cameras and cops don’t really inhibit this kind of petty stuff, and they won’t rewind it. What will help is making the street seem busy.

On childhood road trips to San Luis Obispo I *always* forced my family to listen to the entirety of Dear Catastrophe Waitress for some reason, so excellent work to whomstever threw that on there.

My assumption is that there’s a hope that this stable cost will magically reduce costs elsewhere, but I also suspect that if and until we get generic GLPs that’s not going to prove true—your reminder that fat people aren’t usually the catastrophic claims that raise rates, that’s cancer and pregnancy
110
Andrew Schumacher Bethke @aesb.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Also not shocking they’re not choosing A, the cost is huge and this would probably not be sustainable in any meaningful way. So we’re left with option C. It’s an imperfect lever since premiums tend to not cover claims costs when all is said and done, but it’s the easiest lever.
110
Andrew Schumacher Bethke @aesb.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
The longer answer is that is certain that GLP-1 coverage is responsible for increased claims costs. They basically have three options: eat the cost, remove GLP coverage, pass (part of) the cost along. Pressure to cover GLPs for weight loss is IMMENSE right now, so not shocking they’re not choosing B

Andrew Schumacher Bethke @aesb.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
So the short answer is that no, they don’t “have to” if we’re understanding “having to” as being made to do something rather than choosing to do it. Functionally all parts of self-insured coverage are up to the employer, including employee premium and what is covered (within ACA minimums).

You don't have to answer the door for the Feds. Do not voluntarily talk to the Feds. If they have a warrant signed by an actual judge, then they can do precisely what the warrant says. But DO NOT TALK TO THE FEDS. Do not answer the door. If you're arrested, your only words are "I want a lawyer."

Europe is going to build camp where they will concentrate undesirables before getting rid of them. I wonder if there's a term for that? This is no different than the MAGA plan for White supremacy. The EU can pretend it's better all it wants. It is not.

I cannot say this loudly enough: we need everyone to know what is happening at Delaney Hall. 300 detainees inside are on Day 7 of a hunger and labor strike as of today. ICE is beating, gassing, tasing and assaulting protestors outside every night, and it is getting worse.

Also higher Ed grading has roots in the ways that the Ivy League/Oxbridge established themselves as reliable sources of State power and knowledge rather than as markers of learning qua themselves. Kinda makes you wonder?

From my deeply non-expert perspective, it seems like we’re definitely facing a moment where people just need to come to terms with how long-term organizing, as opposed to emergency action, requires taking on the risk of increased stability and visibility to be effective.

Fresno Unified student protests continue near downtown ICE office. Police called to break up altercation
Students from multiple Fresno Unified schools walked out of school Tuesday afternoon, converging on City Hall in downtown Fresno. According to a student interviewed by Fresnoland, the walkout was organized through an Instagram post that included the names of more than 15 middle schools and high schools. Martha C., a high school junior, took part in the downtown protest. She and three of her peers from Duncan Polytechnical High School caught a central Fresno bus and made their way to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office on L Street.

We gotta hate Leni for that, but also it was a narrative that was pushed by the Allies themselves. In reality, for every von Braun or Rommel you had legions of idiot losers, including Hitler. It’s vital that we correct this historical myth and that we make clear how it applies to Trump et al.

This has become a key part of my classes that include WW2. The Nazis were almost entirely dweebs and losers who were disliked and uncompetitive, unleashing resentment at people who were smarter and more charismatic than they were. The “evil super genius” shtick is all a fiction.
