Now, you can find our single-cell transcriptomic dataset of the developing grass leaf in The Plant Cell (academic.oup.com/plcell/artic...). You can also screen for the expression of your genes of interest (shiny.ips.unibe.ch). Congrats to all authors, especially the brilliant @lbmountain.bsky.social

Nice parallel! If I remember correctly abscission zone is more like a reinforcement of the primary cell wall, at least for petal abscission. Here we really have a thick secondary cell wall :) but this shows how much these walls are diverse in shape and functions 😊

7/ Could REV explain how C. chenopodiifolia develops both explosive and non-explosive fruit? There is still a lot to do to answer this question... but we found that gene duplication and polyploidy have driven REV functional diversification, which likely allowed one REV homeolog to respond to light.

Aurélia Emonet @aemonet.bsky.social · 23/04/2026
6/ Since REVOLUTA is down-regulated in explosive fruit of C. chenopodiifolia, we wondered what would happen if we overexpressed REV in an explosive fruit? ➡️We induced REV in the endocarp b cell of C. hirsuta and this was sufficient to completely switch their SCW to uniform!

Aurélia Emonet @aemonet.bsky.social · 23/04/2026
5/ So what about explosive fruit? In C. hirsuta, we did not find one, but two REV genes that control SCW formation. We had to knock-out 4 different HD-ZIPIII transcription factors to completely get rid of the endocarp b.

Aurélia Emonet @aemonet.bsky.social · 23/04/2026
4/ Does REVOLUTA control the endocarp b SCW pattern? Looking at rev mutants, we found that in Arabidopsis, REV is necessary for SCW formation, but also for the endocarp b cell fate and the fruit valve polarity.

Aurélia Emonet @aemonet.bsky.social · 23/04/2026
3/ We used this plasticity to compare the transcriptome of underground fruit exposed to light or dark ➡️We found that REVOLUTA is downregulated by light in explosive fruit This required dissecting fruit valves almost blindly in the dark 🙈 – a special skill we develop with @ciarankelly.bsky.social

2/Cardamine fruit rely on a polar secondary cell wall in the endocarp b layer to explode. C. chenopodiifolia also produces non explosive fruit with a uniform SCW. But if you exposed these underground fruit to light… Surprise! Their SCW pattern switches to polar and this make them explosive!💥

Happy to share the third chapter of my postdoctoral adventure at @mpipz.bsky.social ➡️doi.org/10.64898/2026.04.20.719616 We used C. chenopodiifolia's ability to produce explosive aerial fruit and non-explosive underground fruit to identify REVOLUTA's role in cell fate and wall patterning🌿💥 ⬇️🧵

I am beyond thrilled (like the screaming and jumping type of thrilled) that my SNSF Starting Grant was funded. I will start my own lab @unibe.ch next year, studying succulent anatomy development and if and how this anatomy is required for efficient CAM photosynthesis in different Kalanchoë species 🌱

During my PhD, I realized the hardest moments weren’t the work itself, but the psychological challenges. We see lots of productivity tips, but PhD students aren’t machines - they're complex human beings. 🫂 Glad to see well-being in @nature.com 'career column 🍀 www.nature.com/articles/d41...

You’re only human: a six-step strategy to surviving your PhD
Graduate students are not machines. Behaving like one during your programme will leave you frustrated and unfulfilled, says Gauthier Weissbart.
