🌾 Grass leaves are the photosynthetic powerhouses of human civilisation. @lbmountain.bsky.social's transcriptomic atlas of nearly 70,000 cells from shoot apex to mature leaf follows the genetic programs that form a grass leaf 🧬 paper doi.org/10.1093/plce... expression browser shiny.ips.unibe.ch

Happy to share our recent thoughts on how grasses form and pattern stomata doi.org/10.1016/j.pb... 🌾From fate establishment, through within-file patterning to dumbbell formation🌾 Congrats to @lbmountain.bsky.social on getting two publications out in a single day - a first for the lab!

This quote is from the article but it summarises my feelings exactly, especially about the robot lifting weights. Learning takes real effort, developing critical thinking skills can't be outsourced! 👇
I think generative Al is incredibly destructive to our teaching of university students. We ask them to read, reflect upon, write about, and discuss ideas. That's all in service of our goal to help train them to be critical citizens.

GenAl can simulate all of the steps: it can summarize readings, pull out key concepts, draft text, and even generate ideas for discussion. But that would be like going to the gym and asking a robot to lift weights for you.
