Everyone is quoting the same number from the new Steam revenue report: the median game earns $3,631 in its lifetime. Grim, sure. But the figure that actually stopped me sits further down the page. Steam's Gini coefficient is 0.984.

Being wrong about the standard kills companies faster than a bad product does. The cheque that saved them came from Sega, who'd quit hardware five years later. Still gets me that the chips behind the whole AI boom exist because people wanted prettier games.

Everyone's sharing the Sega and Nvidia story as a nice anecdote. It's harsher than that. Nvidia almost died in 1995 for backing the wrong way of drawing 3D graphics. Microsoft backed the other way, everyone followed Microsoft.
