Previously, I have posted about an unused partner in Paper Mario known only as "Ninji Boy", with the only information about him being that he can "lower the block". A newly translated developer interview confirms that he was cut and that director Kawade really regrets not having him.

Excerpt from a 2000 interview with Paper Mario chief director Ryota Kawade and Technical Support Hiroyasu Sasano, recently translated by shmuplations.com
-Were there any other locations you wanted to include?
Sasano: There were... if only we'd had more time.
Kawade: We were cutting it pretty close. We didn't waste anything, although some characters and party members did end up getting cut.
-What kind of characters were they?
Kawade: You know the Ninji characters? They appear in Chapter 7 in Starborn Valley. One of them was originally supposed to join your party when you first meet Merlee. It's a real shame we couldn't get him in because of time constraints.

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, the Mini-Mario ability prevents music from changing properly in some cases. This can lead to a variety of unfitting music scenarios such as "Mournful Surfing", whereby Mario will surf joyfully at a sunny beach while tragic music is playing.

(Caution: flashing) In Super Mario World, Bowser *is* lightning. The Bowser object starts up the lightning effect in his boss battle. Spawning him anywhere else does not make him appear, but does increase the severity of the lightning with each additional Bowser.

In the "Beware of the Rifts" level in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the evil Rift Mario appears as part of the Wonder Effect. Shooting him with a fireball appears to stun him; however, tediously continuing to shoot him with 50 fireballs will actually kill him.

For a long time, humorous clips of Mario saying "Hello door" and "Another door?!" in Super Mario Sunshine were known about, but presumed unused. It turns out they can actually be heard in the game by performing an unreasonably specific action in the debug testing room.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, arbitrary many Super Appeal badges can be obtained. "Appealmaxing" by stacking 32 of them makes Mario so incredibly appealing that any audience, no matter how small (a mere 2 Goombas in the post) will cheer him on hard enough to fully restore his Star Power.

The newer Luigi's Mansion games have a running theme of naming groups of five things in such a way that their first letters spell out "GHOST". Some of these are obvious, while others are more subtle.

It is easy to notice that the first letters of the mansions in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon spell out the word GHOST: Gloomy Manor, Haunted Towers, Old Clockworks, Secret Mine, Treacherous Mansion
However, the same also goes for the boss ghosts and bonus missions: Grouchy Possessor/Gradual Infiltration, Harsh Possessor/Hostile Intrusion, Overset Possessor/Outlandish Interruption, Shrewd Possessor/Severe Infestation, Tough Possessor/Terrifying Invasion
Finally, much more subtly due to not being assigned to one area each, the names of the five regular ghost types in Luigi's Mansion 3 also spell GHOST: Goob, Hammer, Oozer, Slinker, Trapper
The names of the Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon ghosts, unfortunately, spell out GGHSS.

In Super Mario 64, getting burned while twirling preserves Mario's angular momentum. The next time he starts flying as Wing Mario, the preserved momentum from the twirl suddenly returns and spins Mario around.

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, the Red Pepper item makes it harder for Mario and Luigi to jump. An unused animation exists that is theorized to have been intended for this. It likely ultimately went unused due to making Mario and Luigi look constipated.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Mario's fighter persona in the Glitz Pit is "The Great Gonzales", whose title is "The Merciless Executioner". This is actually toned down from the original Japanese version, where Mario's title is "The Executioner from Hell".

The Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. has a bizarre error whereby four of the languages of the Mario Drawing Song are mixed up, so that e.g. selecting "French" will play the song in German. Nintendo has officially acknowledged the issue, but never fixed it.

For an unknown reason, the Greek version of the Donkey Kong Country cartoon series (called ΝΤΟΝΚΥ ΚΟΝΓΚ) added a smug Donkey Kong face as part of the logo that is absent from all other localizations of the cartoon, where the logo is made out of words only.

A cute, but hidden detail in New Super Mario Bros. Wii is that when Mario rescues Peach, she actually hops up and down excitedly (matching Mario's own movement), which cannot be seen in-game due to her floor-length dress.
