once again struck by the realization that beanstalk's tuck game must be *insane*

beanstalk, a reproba (human-like descendant of hyenas) from arknights, in her valentine's day skin. it's very classically lolita in silhouette but runs closer to contemporary chinese brands' daring in terms of showing skin along the shoulders and neckline, in primarily white, but with an underskirt, corset lacing choker bow, and assorted other embellishments in red. beanstalk's hair is done up in pigtails and tied off messily with white bows, and she's smiling at the viewer like she knows a really funny joke about how you're staring at her that she's not going to share the punchline to.

"Harpy," Dove says, less opening the door than insisting it be somewhere she isn't, bodily, without pausing to check that it consented first. It's an unsettling gesture from the seemingly-slight and unprepossessing figure she purports to be in all other respects, the sort of action the passengers had begun to lull themselves into believing entirely the domain of her more obviously brutality-forward companions. "Kirkgrim."

Kirkgrim's already moving before the door opens, of course. Long, rake-thin - stringy like her salt and peppered hair - her frame is bulked out by the great black duster she wears, the length of it dragging across the floor as she lopes her way towards the incoming crowd. Dove notes that Kirkgrim's still midway through replacing her mirrored-glass lenses on her face, even so, and smiles behind her white mask at the much, much older woman. "Dove," she rasps, taking in the struck-dumb crowd beyond the doorframe with a twist-mouth grimness, upper fangs catching against the flesh of her lower lip in what might be displeasure, but is more likely simple wariness and consternation. "Hawk." Of course Kirkgrim knows Hawk is back there, even if Hawk hasn't come into frame herself, yet; she can smell the faint sweat of mild exertion from where she stands. Could have from where she'd sat. Did, in fact, do so. Dove takes a slim pleasure in knowing it was not herself that alerted Kirkgrim to their approach in any way. She knows this because if it had been her, Kirkgrim would not be quite this openly irritated. "How many of them have you rescued, between yourselves?"

Dove throws a glance behind herself. "Half the bodies listed in the manifest. We'll have to trust that the new kids won't get in over their heads for the rest, mm? In any fashion."

"Heard that," says a voice beside them both, and then the presence is gone, and Dove laughs, a high, bright, utterly monotonously dead horror of a noise.

"Slow," calls the Harpy, finally joining the conversation - and drawing all the civilians' attention to her in turn.

Dove could feel the sudden flinch without needing to lift her head and look behind herself to know: those that take in the Harpy's appearance for the first time inevitably recoil, a gunshot of horror and a truly bitter-tasting flavor of awe backfiring through the barrel of their soul. Dove contemplates what it must be like, to be so unacquainted with the alien and the surreal, and for this to be their first flirtation with it. The passengers that glimpse her through the doorway, those that have filed in already - even the feats that precede her presence, the combined unusualness of her comrades, perhaps none of these will have prepared them for the physical shock value of the Harpy's presence, a truly challenging gynoid grotesque. Perhaps it trips their own dysphorias, the opposite of that empathy those who cling to normalcy pride themselves on maintaining so much: a wave of faces distorted by wide eyes and bared teeth, cheeks cratered in a rictus born of proper physical nausea. She'd like to see that. Too bad she's got a job to do, right now; eyes forward, behind her faceless mask. Eyes already where everyone else's have just alighted. On the Harpy.

The Harpy long ago made herself a sight to remember herself by off introduction alone: from the bleeding rawness of her lampreylike mouth as it opened between ceramic-doll lips to the too-long matte-black clacking needle-tips at the end of her gleaming pianist hands to the way ichor stains had long since tattooed themselves along the seam and snapcase of every joint; from the way the remnants of a metallic facsimile of "hair" had been rent and bent upwards into something between a crown of shiny thorns or perhaps a parody of a halo so that long, blackly shimmering tendrils could spool themselves out from within her split skull and curl inward to frame her pale, segmented face where they were not braided to fall behind her back, to the skeletal limbs draped around herself like a cloak, shivering like an inkblot and eating the light.

"They're playing with their food," the Harpy says, the fried-speaker burr intensifying with her own rising amusement.

"Um", interjects the passenger with the glasses, again. A strange thing to note about the fellow, of course, besides his grey-green hair; by Dove's count, she's spied four others with similar sight aids among the civilian compliment, but every time her attention lands upon this one the thin-rimmed spectacles are in his hands, a fidget toy to give himself something to keep centered by. "P-playing? What does that mean?"

Harpy turns her attention on him, and to his credit, though he blanches and flinches unmistakably, he doesn't falter or actually look away. He takes her in, sliding his glasses back up his nose and blinking fast in the face of her cold, pupilless blue gaze. "Time. It is a side effect of the universe loving itself. You are a product of the universe loving itself. But you cannot experience that love yourself. You will die never knowing you are loved the way the universe loves you. When they embrace they know they are loved by the universe and it opens itself to them. They could finish what they do in seconds, but what would you do to know you are loved for just a few moments longer? Anything, yes? So they are playing, again, though they don't have to. Drawing out the fight they are fighting, simply because they can afford to." She steps closer, wingcloak unfurling slowly, the skeletal limbs curling around him like a cage. Her head tilts, squinting. "Metaphors, yes? Humans are fond of them. And you are human, aren't you?"

"I'd smell it, if not," murmurs Kirkgrim, a warning in her voice. "And Hawk's already spelled him, besides. He's a patient, not prey."

"He's something," Harpy says, noncommittally. "But I suppose you're right. We didn't come to hurt any of these people, did we." She steps back, ducking her head, wings folding back round herself. "Let's have Hawk bring them in, then. The room has been made - clean of living things, as requested."

I have no idea what happened, I have no idea what I saw, all I know is that I left the theater floating six feet above the ground. Only the first part of Lost Highway (1996) is as great.

RHS. it's a massive single-building school situated on a hill done up to look like a castle. for decades, every grade of high school was shoved into this building, all 9000 students of them.

the same building, seen from the bottom of the hill, from about a mile or a few of street away. it looms over the brownstones and cars along the sides of the road that goes directly uphill towards its massive bulk.
