Andrew D Wilson @adw.bsky.social · 1hGood point - there is research activity that happens before/in parallel to research projects. 010
Andrew D Wilson @adw.bsky.social · 3hThat and the early slip into ‘well we spent most of our evolution as hunter gatherers so presumably we haven’t had enough time to evolve modern minds’ which just justified so much dumbness. The field wasn’t engaged enough with the real hard work of developing evolutionary explanations 030
Andrew D Wilson @adw.bsky.social · 3h@mattwall.bsky.social and I were just reminiscing about how interesting the idea of this field felt in the 90s - what a great idea to try and connect psychology with evolution! It seemed like such a good move. And then it just got racist and sexist and attracted the worst people; massive own goal 230

During natural behaviors such as station-holding and escape, fish increase their reliance on vision when the flow sensing becomes less predictable. 001
Andrew D Wilson @adw.bsky.social · 3hIt's madness. I think these costs really make it hard to get grants as a new (untested) researcher too - there's a big difference between asking for £150k to do the work and £300k to a funder I think 130
Andrew D Wilson @adw.bsky.social · 3hThoughts? Would love to hear what people think of this as a practical way to develop policy 210
Andrew D Wilson @adw.bsky.social · 3hI think it will stop lazy AI use that is the most likely to cause problems. It also provides a mechanism for consequences if serious problems arise through misuse. And it has the university send a healthy signal about how seriously we take the intersectional issues around AI 100
Andrew D Wilson @adw.bsky.social · 3hPros: I think this brings ALL the issues with AI use to the forefront of planning, instead of being a thing in the background you sort of vaguely acknowledge. I think it sends a clear statement that AI use comes with costs, and those costs may be acceptable, but you need to explicitly justify that 100
Andrew D Wilson @adw.bsky.social · 3hSo, the idea: make AI use an explicit part of the ethics process, at the planning stage of the research project. You can still use AI, but you have to identify relevant risks and suitable mitigations, as you would with other risks, in order to be able to proceed. 110
Andrew D Wilson @adw.bsky.social · 3hThere's also a couple of categories of AI in research; work about using AI to do something, and work on something else that uses AI somewhere along the lines. This distinction feeds into the mitigations, I think 100
Andrew D Wilson @adw.bsky.social · 3hOne that's come up lately - AI has environmental costs, and the university has sustainability commitments. Does using AI impact those commitments, and if so, can the impact be mitigated? 110
Andrew D Wilson @adw.bsky.social · 3hI'm thinking AI use should be explicitly folded into the research ethics process, and treated as a risk you must mitigate. We already ask for data plans about storage, confidentiality, privacy protection, etc, so that's immediately relevant. But AI has other risks to mitigate! 340
Andrew D Wilson @adw.bsky.social · 3hIn ethics, there is the notion of risk categories. You can do risky research, but the more the risks the higher the bar for mitigating processes. The ethics application is about identifying the risks and proposing proportionate mitigation, and ethics evaluation is about whether you have succeeded 100
Andrew D Wilson @adw.bsky.social · 3hThe current document sort of assumes you are using AI, and suggests some things to think about now you are in it. I'm thinking the guidance should take a step back, and first guide the researcher to ask "how, exactly, will I use AI, do I need to, and if so, how can I mitigate the issues?" 100
Andrew D Wilson @adw.bsky.social · 3hWork is developing guidance for responsible use of AI in research. Given 'there is no such thing' isn't clearly an option, I'm thinking about how to feed into the process, and I'm thinking that the best framework is in terms of ethics; making our policy that you have to consider AI use at that stage 130
Andrew D Wilson @adw.bsky.social · 4hAs soon as indirect costs/full economic costing became a thing, we were doomed, because it’s now an income stream for the university and not just about our work 2172
