Today I've learned a little of the history of Sakhalin island, and also about the four species of avocets (Recurvirostra), Yongcheon Cave, and the Canadian folk musician Stan Rogers.

Explain your ideology in a single photo

A meme from @QWESTTV (Quincy Jones) of the Orangutan on bike and Scared child meme adapted to fit their purpose. The orangutan is labelled "Free Jazz" and she is biking in the direction of a scared, screaming child who is labelled "People who say they listen to all genres". I chose this meme for the "explain your ideology in a single photo" because I think it's funny, and apt. It's true! I love and appreciate free jazz, and all genres. I am free jazz, and I am coming for you!

Today I've learned about Belarusian gobelin weaving, the hydrangea season in Japan, and how to say "my garden is teeming with insects" from a native speaker. ✨ It's "In meinen Gerten wimmelt es vor Inseklen", if you're curious. ☺️ I also received this gorgeous card from one of my penpals in Tokyo.

A pop-up card produced by the Sanrio company and sold in Japan. This card depicts hydrangeas in full bloom behind a window pane, with a sparkle effect for rain on the window. The card is made of three layers of material - the back have hydrangeas, and the front has the window illustration. Taken together, it is a 3D window. It's not visible in the photo, but on the back of the card is room for a message. My friend has written to me about the rainy season in Tokyo.

Behold! Passiflora incarnata, better known as passionflower, and to some, maypop or even wild apricot! Today, while working under the floppy canopy, I'd hoped I'd found every hungry ant who found her way on to me... unfortunately, hours later at my desk, I'm finding that it was not quite the case...

A single passionflower bloom amid dense green foliage with bluish-white petals, a white and purple corona, and a structure of fine appendages between the petals and stamens. The large flower is arranged in a ring above the petals and sepals.

Starting your week off with another southeastern US native plant: Yucca filamentosa! Common names: common yucca, bear-grass, needle-palm. Used by the Cherokee. Fun fact: this yucca is pronounced the same, but is distinct from, the root you may know as yuca, cassava or manioc (Manihot esculenta).

The gorgeous pale, cream colored blooms of the Yucca filamentosa, is a species of flowering plant in the family Asparagaceae native to the southeastern United States. This one is growing in a lawn in Tennessee as an ornamental.

Observe the beautiful Safflower, one of humanity's oldest crops! This one was born from seed scattered by wild birds at the feeders. I used to pull up the emerging plants mercilessly, until I learned that they produce beautiful thistle-like golden flowers! Now I'm excited to see the rest bloom.

Three stems of Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) , a thistle-like annual plant in the family Asteraceae. The stem in the middle has a beautiful yellow bloom. The plant appears spiky. If you're able to observe closely, there are tiny insects making homes in the brachts near the flower.

I've been off for two weeks. How's it been, friends? 💙 I'd love to hear your updates. Some treasures from the garden for you.

This echinacea flower bloomed today. You can tell, because the petals are thin and sticking straight out, instead of drooping. The center of the flower is an incredible gold and bright green! The petals are pale purple. A single stem is shown.

A flower that looks like Queen Anne's lace, but it's actually a Black Carrot flower! Yes, the regular carrots like we find at the grocery store, except this one has been allowed to go to seed and bloom out. The Black Carrot variety is an old heirloom.

A single stem of the Dandy Collarette variety dahlia. This one is red with little white ruffles around the petal. The center is egg-yolk golden.

I love rap because it's where black men openly talk about love, betrayal, losing, self-doubt, demons and other vulnerabilities. In 90s rap they talk about it being therapy. Dudes could cry in grief on a track. Ironic the amount of freedom in a tiny recording booth.

Respectfully, think about it though. "So that people have a chance to wrap their heads around it first"? That's prioritizing giving bad actors a little more time to think about what their bad action may or may not look like. That's not something to optimize for.
