I am having complicated feelings about The Odyssey (which I saw last night). Most importantly, check this before you go (yes it includes #spoilers, but it may save you from being effed up for the entire movie for not the reasons intended) www.doesthedogdie.com/media/901726 P.S. Sinon is everything.

This response thread has some context that is important about what I just posted. Doesn't make it any LESS fucked up but it's part of the story.

Do you use Adobe InDesign? Make sure you turn Generative AI off, it defaults to on. You'll need to check to see if it's been turned back on every time you update the app.

I have a longer thing I'm working on about this, with more data and stuff, but the key thing folks need to know: anyone on the left *CANNOT WIN* with any kind of content on platforms where the right owns the algorithm. Not just in politics — in entertainment media, or anything else.

I was today years old when I realized that Rapid Roy (that stock car boy)'s tattoo read "Hey Baby". It was not two separate tattoos, one that said "Baby" and another one that just said "Hey". Roy, had some real BDE. #JimCroce

i feel compelled to remind everyone that chatgpt/LLMs are functionally the *opposite* of an actual expert. the more your problems are unusual or novel, the more likely LLMS are to be wrong. they are least helpful when it's most important
a table labeled "How common is your problem, how helpful is the response?"

There are three columns labeled common, rare, and novel and two rows labeled Actual Human Expert and LLM.

Common problem, human expert: helpful
Rare problem, human expert: more helpful
Novel problem, human expert: most helpful
Common problem, LLM: helpful
Rare problem, LLM: unhelpful
Novel problem, LLM: harmful

The cartoon that appeared this week on the front page of France’s most influential national newspaper, Le Monde Brilliant work by the cartoonist, Guffo.
A large stuffed folder of files with the title “Epstein” is seen with what looks, at first glance, like a red page marker sticking out of the bottom. On closer inspection it is the bottom of a Trump red neck tie. French newspapers once again showing the kind of basic journalistic integrity lacking from most US national newspapers - whose collective negligence has helped ensure a man implicated in the world’s most notorious sex trafficking ring gets to remain President. That the orange pedo felon remains in office is a plague on all their houses. Cunts, one and all.

I just spotted Madeleine Sami playing Tyro the Amazon in an episode of Xena Warrior Princess! She made one of my favorite movies, The Breaker Upperers, with Jackie van Beek and is extremely funny (not as an Amazon though, she is taking that role seriously).

I'm super lucky to have access to a lot of very good library systems. Sometimes there are shenanigans involved in getting cards for those systems. I justify it by using all of them as frequently as possible to increase their patron and use stats hopefully leading to more local support and tax money.

The image is a painted portrait of an older women with short wavy hair, wearing a red jacket, with binoculars hanging around her neck. She is leaning against a tree. Finished in July: 🎧 Automatic Noodle by Annalee Newitz, read by Em Grosland. Cozy, post-apocalyptic, novella about robots running a restaurant. Some peril. Inherently queer. If you Becky Chambers' books, you will like this. Stand out narration on the audiobook too!
Book cover. Text reads: Automatic Noodle, Annalee Newitz, "A story I didn't know I needed right now. So much fun!" -Martha Wells, bestselling author of The Murderbot Diaries. The illustration on the cover shows a giant robot hand holding chopsticks that are pulling thick noodles out of a rectangular food holding box. Another robot sits on the edge of the box. In front of the box starting at the sitting robots feet is a cityscape with the Golden Gate Bridge. In the right-hand corner is a robot with three jointed, insectile metal legs and long hair. On the left hand-side toward bottom two arms with two-pronged claws reaches inward. One claw holds a whisk.
