How the CW Built the ArrowVerse
Join your host Garhdo as they take a deep dive into the ArrowVerse - an interconnected universe of DC Comics Superheroes and their villains designed for the small screen. A universe that built not just its own heroes and teamed them up before the release of Justice League, but also adapted the seminal crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths to tie many existing DC film and television universes into a large multiverse before Marvel.

I love Avatar: Seven Havens! It skews slightly younger like ATLA, introducing a post-apocalyptic setting that revitalizes the Avatar world in a similar way to Legend of Korra - both visually and in terms of its political themes.

Have you complained about bad fandom journalism in a mainstream outlet in recent months? Do you want to help fund the reporting of people who actually know what they're talking about for the low, low price of $3.50 per month?

Lanterns was exactly like every other HBO show. The actors are good and it seems interesting at first, so you watch it every week but nothing ever happens. Then finally something happens, and you don't give a shit.

Lanterns had that trope/theme in most of Tom King’s stuff I’ve read where you’re meant to feel sorry for the soldier-like character for committing atrocities but ignoring or dehumanizing the victims of said atrocities.

yes for sure! the knee-jerk defensiveness of fans of various franchise projects only fuels this sense from mainstream critics that a mediocre, idk...film about superheroes is the best it could be. The old "fans vs critics" narrative (drives me bananas—*no one* is more critical than fans themselves)

One of the things I loved in the Flash pilot was Barry telling his dad-- played by the Flash from the 90s-- "People told me I shouldn't use your name, but I will". It felt like a meta statement of "we were told to slow-roll him being The Flash, but we're not going to do that".

Exactly The Arrowverse started grim and “no tights no flights” hating on comic book stuff But it quickly evolved into being precisely what DC heroes are about : they choose the moral high ground, even at great personal cost Something the Gunn movies aren’t super interested in or struggle with

Yup because HTH was about a liberal reaching a conservative to notice real stuff. Lanterns falters because it knew bros would go apocalyptic from the very mention of real issues (they watch tv “to escape,” we know what from) So they kinda just have the characters express grievance

I don't know what Surf Dracula is, to be honest, but our philosophy was always very simple: If you're trying to figure out how to make these characters cool, you've already lost. Superheroes ARE cool -- the challenge is not f*cking them up.

An important corollary to the Surf Dracula tweet that I think should be talked about more, now that we're basically inundated with these types of shows, is that most of them don't get renewed, but even the ones that are don't turn into the weekly adventures of Surf Dracula in the second season.
Screenshot of a tweet from user @topherfluence: "back in the day if u did a tv show called surf dracula you'd see that fool surfing every week in new adventures but in the streaming era the entire 1st season gotta be a long ass flashback to how he got the surfboard until you finally get ot see him surf for 5 min in the finale"

Think about it: how often in the last decade have you white-knuckled the first season of a show that was really dragging only to get some promising developments in the last few minutes of S1? And then when you come back for S2, it's straight back to dragging and withholding.

This thought brought to you, obviously, by the season finales of both Lanterns and Ted Lasso, both of which promise to become something different and more compelling in their next outing, with absolutely no indication that we should believe that promise.

Gav's analysis of this show within broader corporate machinations is so smart. I get exceedingly frustrated when critics assess franchise media with a patronizing "this kind of thing will never be meaningful so it's great for what it is." The terms of 'success' might differ, but they still...exist.
Text reading: As the TV industry contracts, it gets harder for creators to find funding for original stories. Every streaming service is now pouring money into their own big-name IP adaptations, but this obsession with profitable nerd media is only half of the problem. The other half is the fact that these shows just aren’t held to a high enough standard, which feels especially awkward as HBO attempts to market The Penguin and Lanterns as “HBO shows.”

Instead of delivering the franchise spinoff equivalent of Succession or Chernobyl (or True Detective, the show that Lanterns wants to be), HBO’s slate of Warner Bros. franchise titles is solidly mediocre: Dune: Prophecy, IT: Welcome to Derry, The Penguin, and now Lanterns. DC’s streaming-only shows on HBO Max, Peacemaker and Doom Patrol, don’t seem to be aiming for the same kind of prestige drama tone, and may well have turned out better as a result.

It’s way to NOT lean into what was working, which was the buddy cop dynamic. Coulda just had those two charismatic fuckers bickering and fighting aliens like lethal weapon with superpowers. Instead, they split them up, make them genuinely hate each other, and almost never use the powers. Why?

It’s like they think by subverting audience expectations they’re being clever. But that’s not enough. You gotta subvert them into something awesome and make something that can justify its existence beyond just being in opposition to something. This is the same problem the super girl movie had.

They only idea they had for super girl was “what is she’s a messy rebel, or a role model”. And that was the beginning and end of it. That’s not enough. Lanterns was “what if we do a gritty drama like true detective”. That’s not enough!

LANTERNS; phenomenal cast wasted on absolute dogshit 'prestige TV'. Looked like shit, too; lit and graded like dishwater to the point I couldn't tell if Sinestro was actually even pink. Deathly afraid of setting its own rules and structures. Kelly Macdonald is sublime and done dirty in the finale.

None of the motivations make sense. You want Hal to leave to protect your son. Then when he has no reason to stay, you give him one. But when Hal wants to protect your son, no talking, you just kill him. So you invite John because you're unsure if he should even be protected in the first place?
