Maths as a field of endeavour is turning into the Truth Mines that Greg Egan wrote about in Diaspora. That's also including the questions about whether we want to organically understand things or just have the understanding 'grafted' onto us.

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel we see Sarah, the protagonist, next to a stick figure labeled “AI”. The stick figure says, “my outputs look just like yours now.”
The second panel zooms in on Sarah’s face. Above her we see text reading “I think”.
The third panel zooms in closer on Sarah’s face. Text above her reads “you missed”.
The fourth panel shows Sarah drawing happily in a sunlit room. The text above her reads “the point”.

And I'm going to bet that a lot of what AI companies imagined as the potential exponential-growth big-model use cases aren't writing code or emails, but automating business processes. And Jev/Laya/whatever-comes-next are going to make that vastly simpler and cheaper.

Interesting new pattern I'm seeing in multiple places: - Person has brilliant idea. - They use AI to write it up. - The write-up now contains so much indirection and so many AI tics that the only way to understand it is to talk directly to the person. - ???

It does seem like making companies liable for their own containment breaches might introduce a useful level of caution into the industry. Like sure, we get that at the current speed you can’t avoid disaster. That’s why we’re asking you to slow down to the speed you can be responsible.

If your method of building smarter models quickly involves accidental hacks with growing and hard-to-detect external damage, then that may not be the ideal strategy to prevent accidental hacks with growing and hard-to-detect external damage.

If you don't read the code then you'll have to find or create some other abstraction/notation that gives you legibility into the system and lets you change/guide the system. What will those things be?

Great article relevant to bill C-22 debates in Canada. The argument that backdoors only weaken your *own* systems because adversaries are likely to use someone else’s systems is even more relevant in Canada than in the US, simply because we’re smaller and most systems come from elsewhere.

A new TIL on adding custom MCP servers to both the ChatGPT and Claude regular chat interfaces - it's a little less obvious than I had hoped, but I got there in the end til.simonwillison.net/llms/mcp-in-...
The Claude prompt box with the + menu open, showing Add files or photos, Take a screenshot, Add to project, Add from GitHub, Skills, Connectors (highlighted), Add plugins and Web search. The Connectors submenu lists Add connector, Manage connectors and toggles for Descript, Gmail, Google Calendar and simonwillison.net. The Add connector submenu offers Browse connectors and Add custom connector.

Finally figured out how to explain compositionality: julesh.com/posts/2017-0... A system composes like bricks when its properties can be extrapolated from those of a single member. However the properties of a single cell don't let you extrapolate the emergent properties of a collection of cells.
