New research shows how psychedelics reorganise the patterns in your brain
Brains scans show a signature linked to a dissolved separation between the self and the world.

Our new paper in @natureportfolio.nature.com. Psychedelics don’t simply disorder the brain. We found hidden, context-sensitive organisation beneath the apparent chaos -- strongest in people reporting more positive, profound experiences and a reduced sense of separation from the world. 🧵👇

Stay tuned for more `foundation' models (including from us) as NeurIPS deadline approaches :-) n/n

Adeel Razi @adeelrazi.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
My view is that the future will not be a single MRI-only model, but multimodal foundation models integrating brain imaging, behaviour, physiology, & longitudinal change. The goal is not just bigger models but richer representations of how brains function & adapt across individuals and contexts. 5/n

Adeel Razi @adeelrazi.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
In this sense, today’s MRI foundation models are less like a final “GPT for the brain” and more like competing prototypes exploring the design space. The field is still asking a fundamental question: what should a brain foundation model actually represent? 4/n
110
Adeel Razi @adeelrazi.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
So multiple foundation models are emerging because researchers are testing different assumptions about what the “right” representation of the brain should be. Some optimise for prediction, others for interpretability, multimodal fusion, temporal dynamics, or biological plausibility. 3/n

Adeel Razi @adeelrazi.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
Unlike language, where text shares a common structure and large unified datasets exist, neuroimaging is fragmented. Different labs use different scanners, preprocessing, tasks, and populations. As a result models trained on MRI or fMRI often learn different representations of brain organisation. 2/n

Adeel Razi @adeelrazi.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
Why are there so many “foundation models” for brain if the goal is to have a single foundation model? I am often asked this question these days so I thought to put it out here. The short answer is that we are still in the exploration phase, not the consolidation phase. Theard 1/n 🧵👇

Thread 2: A way to see a stochastic differential equation is the equation below representing how X evolves in time. dW is a "stochastic increment" -- it is introducing "randomness". But a LOT changes because of that, and it is the reason the below representation is not actually a good one! (1/n)
\frac{dX(t)}{dt} = f(x) + g(x)\frac{dW(t)}{dt}

What Is a Generative Model? Definitions, Disagreements, and Evaluation in Human Neuroimaging

Interestingly, people agreed much more on how models should be evaluated: out-of-sample generalization, realism, & interpretability mattered more than labels. Our takeaway is simple: clarity beats terminology. Say what you mean when you say “generative model.”

Adeel Razi @adeelrazi.bsky.social · 15/01/2026
Prompted by discussions at #OHBM2025, we surveyed the neuroimaging community. The result? ✔️ Some agreement that generative models should simulate data ❌ Major disagreement about whether common, widely used methods count as “generative” at all.

Adeel Razi @adeelrazi.bsky.social · 15/01/2026
What do we actually mean when we say “generative model” in neuroimaging? The term is everywhere, in neuroscience and AI, but its meaning is often assumed rather than stated. In a new bioRxiv perspective, we asked how researchers really use and understand it. 🧵
