LLMs cease to be useful when they can't be used to scam people into unknowingly reading slop anymore. When the typewriter was invented, no one had to pretend its output was handwritten to get people to accept it. Typing had its own utility. LLMs are scamtech that have no utility outside the scam.

One developer said they feared Anthropic's watermark could lead clients to flag their work as AI-generated and raise questions about authorship.

Also all the stuff I use is free, sans the phone you need to operate in society anyways. Not having money isn't going to get in the way of me creating things.

And to be clear, it's not "hours on my phone a day". Sometimes I spend a few seconds jotting down dialogue or a few minutes writing some stuff down. Tiny bits of time that add up. Eventually you'll have something to show. Something that's you. Something that isn't expensive slop.

I'm an adult who has very limited time. And yet I've found no need to use slop machines to express myself. I've published two books and I'm working on a third. I make 3D artwork to go with the universe. I do most of it on my phone. So, lol. "No time"? If you want it enough, you'll find time.

Likewise with @scalzi.com , smaller author but I don't identify with any of my characters either. I certainly use experiences as inspiration fodder, but I would not want to be one of my characters or live in the universes I create.

I'm still busy at work and I've gotten a good way through the initial stuff for Addercop Space: Phoenix. Speaking of, the ship got a little banged up in the last book, which seems like a good opportunity to do a retexture now that I know more about #Blender #Sci-Fi #SciFi #Worldbuilding #Addercop

Funny thing about the #clippy/#clippit thing to protest AI - when I was finishing my last book, I needed a grammar checker. All the grammar checking tools I could find advertised being AI. So I dusted off an old copy of Windows 98 and Office 97 and clippy grammar checked my book.

It depends on the reference frame that you're asking about time dilation in. For *you*, you'll just experience normal time, though distances seem to contract. Outside observers will disagree on the amount of time they perceive you taking to move based on their own inertial reference frames.

The one thing I miss about the netbook era is small-ish devices with a keyboard. I'd love an eight inch (tops) laptop to do my writing on. With that said, part of my my commute doesn't bother me despite the length. Sitting on a train going through a city listening to Synthwave and writing? Yes.

re: generative AI I have finally fully and accurately explained my problem with how it’s marketed and used. And now, you can use it, too.
Generative Al is being marketed as a tool designed to reduce or eliminate the need for developed, cognitive skillsets. It uses the work of others to simulate human output, except that it lacks grasp of nuance, contains grievous errors, and ultimately serves the goal of human beings being neurologically weaker due to the promise of the machine being better equipped than the humans using it would ever exert the effort to be.

The people that use generative Al for art have no interest in being an artist; they simply want product to consume and forget about when the next piece of product goes by their eyes. The people that use generative Al to make music have no interest in being a musician; they simply want a machine to make them something to listen to until they get bored and want the machine to make some other disposable slop for them to pass the time with.

The people that use generative Al to write things for them have no interest in writing. The people that use generative Al to find factoids have no interest in actual facts. The people that use generative Al to socialize have no interest in actual socialization.

In every case, they've handed over the cognitive load of developing a necessary, creative human skillset to a machine that promises to ease the sweat equity cost of struggle. Using generative Al is like asking a machine to lift weights on your behalf and then calling yourself a bodybuilder when it's done with the reps. You build nothing in terms of muscle, you are not stronger, you are not faster, you are not in better shape.

You're just deluding yourself while experiencing a slow decline due to self-inflicted atrophy.

Aspiring writers, here is some advice: * Unlearn the "You must always have a punchline or be quipping one liners" you learned from the MCU. This is one of the ways works talk down to you - because they think you have a 5 second attention span and tune out if there's no joke.

While I'm on the general subject of "AI," let me just say that it's a real dickheaded maneuver to tell an actual artist that their work "looks like AI." Their work doesn't look like "AI" because they're aping what "AI" does; it looks like "AI" because the "AI" company fucking stole from them.

This is the battleship by itself. As the largest military assets, battleships rely on their shuttle bays for logistics transfers - either by docking to stations large enough to accommodate them, or via underway replenishment by shuttles and other smaller ships. #scifi #worldbuilding #blender #gimp

Christian Pate @addercop.space · 23/02/2025
Cruisers are also the largest military ships easily accommodated at many space stations; and as such they're the largest to have side mounted airlocks for cargo and crew transfer.
000
Christian Pate @addercop.space · 23/02/2025
They have significantly fewer missile tubes than battleships, sporting only sixteen forward facing ones (in comparison to the dozens a battleship can provide in a broadside), but sport a decent battery of anti-ship graysers (gamma ray lasers) and optical point defense lasers.
100
Christian Pate @addercop.space · 23/02/2025
These ships can sometimes be found visiting spaceports of nearby powers to show the flag without the cost and politically problematic intimidation that a battleship might cause - while still sending a clear message that 'our warships can reach you'.
100
Christian Pate @addercop.space · 23/02/2025
In a fleet like this cruisers typically perform anti-ship intercepts or help out frigates in intercepting incoming missiles. Primarily, however, their duties are to 'cruise' around and patrol shipping lanes or otherwise operate independently on extended patrols.

Whereas frigates and cruisers are small enough that any significant damage is probably fatal anyways so just not armoring them for a bit of extra maneuvering lets them do their jobs better and saves money while probably increasing their survivability.
000
Christian Pate @addercop.space · 22/02/2025
This ensures maximum survivability in combat, because these things are expensive. You're only ever going to be able to build a few, so you want them to not die if they start losing a fight. They're also huge, so a tiny bit of extra agility by eschewing Armor won't count for much at all.
100
Christian Pate @addercop.space · 22/02/2025
It's always bothered me when this big, supposedly intimidating ship has some - presumably very vital - piping and wiring visible when it could easily just be armored. Those are big 'shoot here! shoot me here!' signs.
100
Christian Pate @addercop.space · 22/02/2025
The ships themselves are intentionally a bit basic. I wanted them to be a bit primitive, so they're literally just big pressure vessels - hence the cylinder shapes. Although the frigates and cruisers do have some exposed piping, I decided to forgo it on the battleship.
100
Christian Pate @addercop.space · 22/02/2025
Transversal is an important part of a missile trying to evade defense batteries - fly past them faster than they can turn to track you - so the smaller anti-missile ships will attempt to maneuver to lower a missile's transversal relative to them to make it easier to kill.
