basically, they care more about punishing people than housing them, even though that's actually the best way to reduce the public disorder they supposedly want to address & is also kinder and cheaper & more effective.

When I set out to fact check “The Cities That Said Yes to Drugs” which argues that harm reduction may increase overdoses, I expected some cherry picking and misdirection. But not to find basic math errors and debunked right wing talking points asserted as fact in the Atlantic’s print edition.

A close read of "The Cities That Said Yes to Drugs" found errors in basic arithmetic as well as more deliberately misleading elements

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

Naloxone saves lives. This drug is being designed to make clinical treatment more convenient. While it may have some useful applications, it also (like naloxone) has the potential to be weaponized against drug users. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

important article. it sure sounds like meta is using disabled people to sell more pervert glasses and make regulation more difficult
Rebecca Monteleone, a University of Toledo disability studies professor and author of The Double Bind of Disability: How Medical Technology Shapes Bodily Authority, raised a related concern: that Meta could be using its efforts with disabled people to build a case for its technology more widely. This could render products like
smart glasses a more challenging case for regulators and politicians. "We're seeing the systematic deconstruction of disability rights in the United States," Monteleone said. "A company like Meta can justify the development of this technology based on all of these assumptions that there must be a social good here" in a moment
when wins for disabled people are depressingly rare.

It's kind of interesting to see centrists trotting out the old "leftists have to compromise because we have to vote against fascism" again while leftists win. Politicians get elected by promising to solve people's problems. We've been offered so little for so long, we've forgotten what we deserve.
