The Curse of Fenric, the last truly great Doctor Who story from the 20th century era. And it made me a fan for life
You want to know the first media that scared the crap out of me as a child? These zombie vampires from the future that rose out of the fog-ridden seas of coastal England to devour humanity in The Curse of Fenric, one of the greatest Doctor Who stories of all time. Here, Captain Sorin uses the psychic field generated by his faith in the communist revolution to hold the zombies at bay while he walks through them

Their new guitarist is a seasoned metal musician named Nick Johnston, who grew up in small-ish towns of southern Ontario. He rocked so hard & it was amazing watching this new lineup groove together. The most professional & the most fun

Mastodon is a very different beast today, obviously because Brent is gone. But with that lineup’s last album Hushed & Grim, I felt like that was a natural end to the old band. This is a new Mastodon, it’s just as weird, there’s more keyboards, I’m here for it

Troy Sanders’ energy and love of music was beautiful. The man who co-wrote an album about Rasputin going on an astral trip now looks like Rasputin. It was wonderful seeing his joy in metal & performance as well as his embrace of his age & sage

I had no idea that the visuals would be such an amazing, detailed trip. The whole venue was lit bright with the spectacle of this animation
A demon night who is on fire swings his axe blade down to the audience of the Mastodon show. The axe is also on fire A queen made of stone hovers with menace over the audience while Brann Dailor plays some wicked awesome drumsA terrifying octopus beast with a mouth full of fangs and countless eyes threatens the audience with a great time at the Mastodon show The eyes of a snake emerge from the mouth of a snake which emerged from the eye of a snake which emerged from the mouth of a snake at the Mastodon show, all of which is fucking metal as fuck

On a walk to run some errands today, I passed along the pedestrian bridge overlooking the subway station construction near our house. It demolished a gas station & mini mall. I hope this is eventually worth losing the Little Caesar’s
An epic view of the construction site that will eventually become Gerrard Subway Station in East Toronto. Trucks, workers, and trailers are scattered around a dusty site, with trees lining the residential streets on the far side look on

Taking a moment to reflect on some beauty in decay as I take out some trash. Come for the intelligent takes on contemporary business and politics. Stay for the wasps
Is that an apple fallen out of a bag when one of my neighbours was taking out the trash a while ago? Yes, it’s an old apple but I think something else is there as well Aha! Wasps. It seems to be lunch time for the wasps and one apple really goes a long way This really is a very large number of wasps eating this apple. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen this many wasps crawling on one thing before in my life. There really are quite a lot of wasps

Yesterday the wife & I took an evening trip to Hamilton for Supercrawl. I was happy to see more art & more space on the street, even if it likely means smaller profits for the festival. Community atmosphere is how these thrive Also, this:
This is a praying mantis sculpture that is also a fully functional bicycle. What else do you need to know?

So my wife bought this hat with the traditional logo of the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. Am I the only one who sees Alex DeLarge here? A wonderful fair for all Toronto’s little malchiks & devotchkas?
A hat featuring a CNE logo that certainly does evoke something more than just a happy fairground clown

A benefit of my kids taking a couple of weeks of summer camps at the Art Gallery of Ontario is being able to scope trippy installations before pickup time, like these sculptures by Ranbir Sidhu
Steel sculpture by Ranbir Sidhu evoking the human will to connect our world with the divine. Holy shit The largest sculpture in Ranbir Sidhu’s Asteroid series, conceived as a heritage of human ingenuity adrift in interstellar space. Holy shit These 21 sculptures by Ranbir Sidhu represent the virtuous warrior spirit of his Sikh heritage. Each one is unique, designed a little differently from all the others. Holy shit

What’s better for the quality of people’s lives? Whimsy like this? Or a destructive airport that won’t even be used?

I’m spending the day with my family on the Toronto Islands exploring the whimsical fun which is at risk of being bulldozed for an airport expansion so that JP Morgan doesn’t have to write off its bad investment in Billy Bishop Airport
Low key rides at the Toronto Islands Centreville park: a little tugboat ride, a small roller coaster, a 20 foot high drop ride with a frog on top, and a ski lift ride that slowly carries you over the amusement park and petting zoo. All this whimsy is at risk because JP Morgan has been lobbying the Ontario and Canadian governments to expand the Billy Bishop airport over the entire area of the three main islands, so that they can reap profits from an otherwise sundowning investment

When you live in a maximally decorated house, you don’t always notice new deco right away. One of my kids built this in a cosplay class that just wrapped & I didn’t realize that this has been in my living room since Wednesday evening
Sitting next to a bookshelf in my living room is this enormous green rabbit head of one of the characters from Five Nights at Freddy’s that my enby made in class. That is very realistic. Much too realistic. Why didn’t I notice that this has been here for 38 hours already?

Consider that Smalls does a lot of his social platform networking on X and would seem to spend a lot of time there
While Smalls uses his platform to draw labour organizing into the popular imagination, he also uses it to lash out at labour’s allies. His feed on X has increasingly become left-sectarian and self-promoting, lashing out at left wing politicians when they fail to give him the attention he desires. Politicians like APC and Bernie Sanders, who helped boost Smalls’ platform from the beginning and have been great allies of the ALU, have been frequent victims of his wrath.

Peter Capaldi as Doctor Who looking suitably intensely at you, into your soul! Even in a very small box, like he is here, he has been and would be much more effective than a conspiracy-addled sociopath who dissects roadkill, hasn't eaten a vegetable since the last century, and may or may not consume distilled extracts of bear penis to treat his erectile dysfunction

I've shared about this incident on LinkedIn, but it matters for the folks connected to me on BlueSky & #AcademicSky too. Storytime! www.linkedin.com/posts/adamri...
From my LinkedIn: Today, a story of frustration about publishing. Although I no longer work full-time in the higher education sector, I still work on research and pursue projects in non-fiction publishing and media. A really nice opportunity I got a few weeks ago was a request from a major research journal on the history and philosophy of science to peer review a submission. The article was great, and a sign of a very fascinating larger project to come, so I recommended publication.
