🎃
A 7 panel comic by the artist. First panel: The artist is running from a distance towards a group of people playing basketball in the park. The artist is holding a pumpkin above their head and screaming "AAAAAAAAA". Second panel: The artist has leapt up and is in position to slam dunk the pumpkin into the basketball hoop. Panel three: the pumpkin splatters violently against the backboard of the basketball hoop, sending orange pumpkin goop everywhere. Panel four: the players stand staring, covered in pumpkin goop and shocked. Panel five: the artist stares at them wide-eyed, also covered in the goop and says "it's October FIRST". Their hand reaches towards their face. Panel six: the artist rips off their own face like a rubber mask to reveal a skeleton beneath. Panel 7: the group of players stand shocked and horrified, watching as the skeleton falls to the ground in a pile of bones, the sound effects says "CLATTER".

We are at the break glass moment on the Democratic Party and its treatment of transgender people, and it is my opinion that if we don’t act now and loudly demand to be heard, we will suffer the consequences of their shift.

The upside of getting older is laughing with delighted surprise at a post, moving to give it a like, then seeing that I already did at some point in the unknowable past.

Well, in my later posts that's exactly what I'm trying to find out. Didn’t get a good sample of answers, though.

Anyway—there's a compromise solution I see people use that could give a sense of page turns without implying you've, say, preemptively decided your manuscript is a 48-page book with printed endpapers or whatever. They number their spreads with just a [1], [2], [3]...

(In the interest of not impugning someone I don't intend to, the author in question was a Mr. G)

As an illustrator, I'm trying to remember if I've ever been given another author's manuscript that was already paginated. I believe I was a couple times by one high-profile author whose name I don't feel like typing. In one case I agreed with his pagination and followed it. In another I changed it.

Adam Rex @adamrex.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
I would say a manuscript could show it's making good use of page turns with a mere section break. My PB manuscripts tend to have these discrete sections of text set apart by blank lines. But in the example I've included, not every break is meant to be a page turn, so maybe I am confusing the issue.

Adam Rex @adamrex.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Okay, I got some context from another author that adds to this—they say they've heard from editors that they should be showing a good sense of page turns in their manuscripts. I think there's more than one way to do this.

Adam Rex @adamrex.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
This is good context, anyway—thank you, Michelle.

Thanks, Maggie! I'm going to be doing some crits soon and I guess I'll steer clear of discussing this unless I see an obvious red flag (like that the author's proposed pagination seems to be pitching a 36-page picture book).

Adam Rex @adamrex.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
I guess I don't see what's gained by trying to dictate the pagination. At worst I'd worry you come off looking controlling or presumptuous (or even ignorant—some authors just end up proving they don't know how many pages PBs are). At best...actually what IS the best case scenario here?

Adam Rex @adamrex.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
I don't do this, and don't think I ever would—especially in a manuscript I don't intend to illustrate myself, because I tend to think page turns are ultimately the illustrator's decision. But I see it in a lot of manuscripts, and I realize a lot of my assumptions might be out of date.

Adam Rex @adamrex.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
Got a Q for all the picture book authors: Do you put pagination in your manuscripts? Not just breaks in the text to indicate where you *think* pages might begin and end, but actual notes indicating this text is page 1, this is 2-3, and so forth?

I'm inclined to think it was just the initials, or the fact that his name would come after mine in an alphabetical list of creators.

Tim Curry, in his prime, could chew every bit of the scenery, swallow the whole camera, and spit them out in exactly the shape that the work called for. For his most noted roles, casting anyone else would have made for a very different result. It is so good that he was around.

This girl I used to waitress with in Austin, we moved to New York together in 2003 on a literal Greyhound bus. Shared a fifth floor walk-up studio that, when it rained, had more leaks in the ceiling than we had pots and pans. We used to get drunk and smoke off the fire escape and do “sad-offs.”

on Sophie Cunningham and a trans controversy that doesn't involve any actual trans people: defector.com/the-right-ha...
This rhetoric is ideal for listeners who believe trans women are an issue that they're supposed to care about, but don't actually have any real-world experience with them. The hypothetical trans girl who's supposedly causing all this trouble in the WNBA is the perfect tool for the conservative movement. She can't fight back, she can't disprove anyone's assumptions, and she can't garner sympathy when she's the target of hate. The perfect trans girl is the one who only exists in the imagination of the loudest cis people. Her monstrousness, the need to "protect young girls in a locker room" from her, gives them permission to enact policies that in reality only harm the anonymous girls, cis and trans, who want to play sports without the invasive scrutiny of gender-obsessed adults.
