The most maligned word in the American lexicon. Casual reminder that socialism means full, centralized production. Liberals and socialists were on ‘the same side’ in opposition to monarchy. But socialists wanted to replace it with uber-centralization, while liberals wanted minimalist centralization.

Currently in the midst of having to organize moving. Every attempt to solidify plans with my son (19) ends with him saying, ‘it will be fine.’ To which I must repeat, ‘it will be fine if we actually make these plans and stick to them.’ ‘I’m real mad someone will figure it out’ isn’t a plan.

I’ve always been a little bit sympathetic to Apple’s arguments on these matters, myself. Even among younger (though GenX has very savvy ppl ofc) generations that are more computer literate, the vast majority remain pure consumers. Turnkey digital devices require this to be turnkey consumer products.

I don’t think LLMs are or ever will be conscious. It’s thought animatronics. I think through their development we are projecting some reality about consciousness, so perceiving consciousness as not necessarily bound to a pinpoint location is more a function of our experience.

Interesting debate raging here. I don’t think a definition is required to substantiate your position. Consciousness is an absolute mystery Claude is not. Claude is a construct built from our corollary measures of consciousness, which we can’t explicitly define. Therefore, Claude cannot be conscious.

Anyway, if the DSA wants to get serious about ‘religious socialism,’ I’m all ears. I just am having trouble envisioning The American Kibbutz taking off or being treated as anything other than a massive retreat from ‘the great revolution’ by the majority of those drawn to this organization.

It all occurred. The claim of genocide is nothing new, it’s been going on my whole life and as far as I can surmise ever since the Arab-Israeli war. Hamas does operations in ways that explicitly guarantee Palestinian civilian deaths, and explicitly the death of children. It’s part of their strategy.

So I went to the DSA site and found their ‘religious socialism’ page. I will say I was surprised but I was not very convinced either. There is a list of members but they go on to list ‘public figures’ and ‘historical figures’ (such as MLK and Malcolm X) that were never explicitly socialist.

It is maximally profitable right now to either sell panic *about* trans people, or sell panic *to* trans people. Both impulses feed the media consumer's desire to feel mastery over events. One is simple bigoted conspiracism, the other is a defensive crouch that offers a false sense of security.
Emily: I think about this as a journalist and a novelist: I cannot control how the reader takes what I write. Especially when reporting, I try to be as careful as I can, but somebody might read what I write and conclude, Well, we're all going to die. And there's such an incentive structure to walk right up to the edge of catastrophe or even stick a toe over the line, and even publications I think are terrific will get as close to that line as they can because they know that drives subscription dollars and clicks. That's not just true of trans media; it's true of the media writ large. How do you think about that incentive structure, especially as it relates to social media?

Me: There's two ways to generate clicks about trans issues. One is to sell panic about trans people; the other is to sell panic to trans people. The social media incentive structure there, as it is with so many issues, is the septic, perverted version of that old classic about local TV news: If it bleeds, it leads.

Selling people that sense of control is, as I noted, the same thing at the root of a lot of conspiracism: not to trust mainstream sources who tell you things aren't quite so bad or things could get better or don't panic. It's the cinematic logic of a disaster movie where the people who are saying, "Actually, you should panic!" are correct. Think about everything from the narrative structure of Independence Day or Mass Effect. The catastrophizer is actually correct against all the people saying, "I'll calm down. It won't be so bad." That story structure is very, very popular, and it gets you invested in the protagonist with a pleasing sense of dramatic irony for the audience. They know something many of the other characters don't or refuse to accept.

We are all reared on some version of this story, and it seeps into everyday life. There's an excellent piece from CBS News in 1967 by Eric Sevareid reporting on the findings of the Warren Commission [whi

The model will be developed through trial and error and process of elimination. It can’t be analytically constructed. Folks will decide how much ‘online’ they can really stomach or emotionally afford, leaving the folks who think it’s a magic lever to social change lost in their own house of mirrors.

The DSA used to be Zionist. The DSA was founded by a devout Catholic. You literally have no idea what you’re talking about. Every attempt to wrestle socialism away from Marxism is met by Marxist agitation, infiltration and ideological subjugation. Marxism is anti religious and antisemitic.

The socialism of today, as filtered through Marx, is really just a time capsule of European thought in the 18th and 19th centuries. To this society religion is synonymous with Christianity, and Judaism is the ‘orgin of religion.’ These socialists see religion as ‘bad.’ The antisemitism is baked in.
