When notional hours of learning per credit x 120 credits are divided by total length of terms/semesters, it is not clear that the asks were realistic to begin with. But that's an adjacent issue, that doesn't seem very well attended to in the sector.

'ethical' and 'responsible' really are the 'polite' of the present moment, aren't they? Reminder: asserting something doesn't make it so.

If anyone here has institutional access to Proquest's Early European Books Online and would be willing to do me a favour, please do let me know :o). In the UK, if Library Hub Discover is to be believed, you only have access to the right package if you are at U. of Bradford, Durham, Essex, or UCL.

The most annoying part of this -- almost as if it were calculated to irritate me particularly -- was the equation of Galileo's use of the telescope in the seventeenth century with researchers' use of 'AI' in the present.

Well, the repeated references to Galileo in this compulsory research integrity training is certainly going to enliven* the experience for me. [* you know by, for example, raising my blood pressure, prompting vigorous momentary physical responses, and so on]

Dear Random Emailer Du Jour - Sorry, but you do not get to send professional historians on a quest. I understand that you think the evidence that supports your unlikely pet theory is 'out there', but no, we are not going to go looking for it. You go find it, and let the world know if you do. The evidence is clear: countries with lower NEET rates than the UK get there almost entirely through higher rates of post-18 education. In these countries, more young people stay in education for longer and often combine it with work.

Counterpoint to the anti school Latin disc-horse: I chose to study Latin GCSE when offered it at my rural comprehensive; it was fun; it was taught by a radical (she turned up to class 'squiffy' from celebrating on the day Thatcher resigned); it remains essential to my job.

Screenshotted, because dunking on the author with a quote skeet would be unfair. But, wow -- as pure an example of 'I know history of science is a thing, but I cannot imagine the existence of historians of science' as I think I've ever seen.
Screenshot of part of a skeet saying: 'I love reading about the history of science. Is there a paleontologist who can tell me why we just... didn't dig up any dinosaurs until the 1800s?'

A favourite railway roof...
An angled view of the interior of a domed glass roof, formed of a dense radial pattern of grey-painted metal dividers and translucent white glass. At the base of the dome is a green band, divided into panels by carved wood pillars. In each panel, pose a pair of putti, connected by a crescent of flowers and foliage. It is in the Edinburgh station waiting room.

So a key question now is whether the new @andyburnham.bsky.social led administration will take the higher education funding crisis seriously as a threat to his aspirations around regional growth and skills…
"Universities will be central to achieving the regional growth aspirations of our new prime minister, but they are suffering a major financial emergency," Shah said.
"The result is greater inequalities, fewer opportunities for students and the gradual erosion of the world-leading research our economy, democracy and global standing rely on.
«The alarm bells are ringing, and policymakers should treat these findings as a wake-up call before more lasting damage is done."

Sorry, forgot to add alt-text.
The Sixteenth Century Journal seeks a new Editor to work with the existing editorial staff, as Dr. Karen Nelson has just been chosen as one of SCJ’s Senior Editors. The Editor works with the other Editors—Barbara Pitkin and Jennifer DeSilva—to find reviewers for articles submitted for potential publication and guide reviews and articles through the online peer-review system. The Editors should attend the Sixteenth Century Society Conference for SCJ’s annual editors’ meeting, and may carry out other duties as well, such as representing SCJ at academic conferences, organizing conference panels, and inviting submissions. This is an unpaid position.
All manuscript review is handled through email and the Editorial Manager system, coordinated by the journal’s managing editor at the University of Chicago Press. The new Editor will be trained to use the online submission system, and may therefore be located anywhere in the world, as all work is online. Manuscripts come in throughout the year, and SCJ prides itself on a short turn-around in its submission process, so the position involves work across the year.
Dr. Nelson has been primarily responsible for submissions in literary and cultural studies, and her replacement should have strong expertise in these fields. Knowledge of other fields, such as women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, or art history, is also welcome. The new editor will also need a broad understanding of the field of early modern studies to fit with SCJ's interdisciplinary mandate, global coverage, and international authorship and readership. SCJ’s editorial team all maintain active research and publication profiles, but it is recommended that those applying for this position not be under stringent publication requirements. Experience in editing books and/or journals preferred.
Applications should be directed to Merry Wiesner-Hanks, SCJ Senior Editor, at merrywh@uwm.edu. They should include a letter of interest and a CV. Please submit by 15 July 2026.
