Currently on holiday in Mexico and, having spent years noticing the point in the day when North America wakes up and logs on, that's now me. I look forward to failing to catch up properly with the discourse, being racist about British food and assuming everything is about North American politics.

Oh Christ. I'm getting flashbacks to local Labour Party meetings in the Corbyn years where some absolute danger would trot out this nonsense and then look around as if awaiting their fucking Nobel.

My mom still does this for her macaroni bake, though we did switch to cheese and onion for a period which I thought improved the flavour.

When I saw it in France, they made you spend so long going round the annotated facsimile that everyone was bored and didn't stick round long when we got to the real thing. Smart system in retrospect.

Everyone is saying Nicolas Roeg's 'The Witches' and it's a great choice, but I'd like to shout out the audiobook version of it I had as a kid because I used to fast forward through the high witch's speech in terror. As ever, picture's better on the radio.

Peter Foster continues his positively Reithian series profiling Tom Longstaff in 'Explorer'. To give his work the spotlight it so deserves, I chose to open the Journal with Longstaff's photo of his team on the way to the summit of Trisul (then the highest mountain ever climbed) in 1907.

It's impossible to list all of the fantastic pieces that I took pleasure in editing, but I'd like to highlight Alberto Sánchez Miravalles' piece examining the Blatten landslide and the ways in which new monitoring technology helped to avert an even greater disaster.

Sinead Thin contributed an excellent guide to some of the less well-known climbing destinations in Norway. To acknowledge this and to mark 150 years since W C Slingsby's first ascent of Storen, all of the section frontispieces are illustrations from Slingsby's 'Norway, the Northern Playground'.

This year's endpapers are both early maps of the Rwenzori mountains (this one is by botanist Elliot Scott and dates from 1890). They tie in to a wonderful piece from Ian S Gibson who provides a potted history of this African range and recounts the unrepeated 1975 Polish traverse.

The front cover was a no-brainer. James Price & George Ponsonby's first ascent of the NW face of Aikache Chhok leads this year's edition and the boys are just as handy with their cameras as they are their ice axes. The only hard part was picking one photo from the numerous stunners they sent me.

Remember reading about the Francis The Walking Mule films, which were huge movies in 1950s America and are never spoken of. People used to go nuts for a talking donkey. We should mention that more often!

Ending the triple lock isn’t the same as cutting pensions. Thatcher linked the state pension to inflation rather than earnings growth with the result that the value of pensions fell relative to earnings. The triple lock was designed to reverse than trend. It’s done its job. Restore the earnings link

Read it for the first time earlier this year having been put off the Culture books by the slog of 'Consider Phlebas' and was blown away by it. As you say, to construct numerous fake incomprehensible games and then get the reader to engage with them is a remarkable feat of writing.
