This is an interesting take. Newcastle's trams, like many other cities', were arguably disposed of because of their lack of flexibility and need for more infrastructure upkeep. I think electric buses would be better on roads personally.

One long thread I did at the other place was on shopping centre postcards. So, get ready for it again - I’ll try and add one each day. Tragically, they are all filed alphabetically. So, we start in Accrington, and an odd-looking clock outside Dixons in the Arndale Centre:
Accrington Arndale Centre clock. It looks like a large flower on a blue and yellow striped pole whose petals have opened up to reveal some kind of scene - presumably this happens on the hour? Photo by Gordon Flanagan, published by Photographic Heritage

Just a random relic of the #ner / #lner #tynesideelectrics that sits in my garage. It's an insulator from the old third rail but more importantly it's Royal Doulton's contribution to #railway #history as it carried electricity on the country's first electrified mainline in 1904 ⚡🚃

“This is the railway that devolution built. A railway designed for local needs… It’s symbiotically Tyne & Wear’s railway, but the Metro is Britain’s innovation railway too. It’s local but it’s not parochial.” This short love letter to the Tyne & Wear Metro is well worth a read.

From a colonial hill town to Idris Elba’s island masterplan: what do these Sierra Leone developments tell us about urban elites?
Sherbro Island City’s vision of an elite urban development brings to mind some of the colonial thinking around the construction of Freetown’s Hill Station enclave a century ago.

So the new Metro can't even run the full system as the #GatesheadHighway falling to pieces. Meanwhile, Tyne Bridge being repaired, A1 Bypass being worked on, Tyne Tunnels reduced to a tunnel at weekends, work to start on Redheugh Bridge, no evening ferries. At least the pedestrian tunnel has a lift.
