Love this image of the "Newcastle Cloak", a punishment for 'common drunkards' in the seventeenth century, from John Sykes' "Local records" (1833). Even he asked, "why has this punishment been laid aside?" Some excellent Friday night content possible here, so I concur.

Tugging further on this fascinating historical thread... This painting shows Sir Harry Harper with a favourite horse, Furiband, and an unnamed groom, c. 1774: could this be a portrait of "Jockey Jack"? I certainly hope so! #18c

Our new “Royal Funerals” series begins in 1649, with the execution of Charles I. Whilst the moments that led up to this event are well known in the British psyche, instead we ask: what happened to Charles post-mortem? Explore this legacy in our post tomorrow! (c) Parliamentary Art Collection

🪦 Where are the dead? My latest post examines how the Victorian burial crisis led to sweeping reforms that moved the dead from churchyards to suburban cemeteries, and why we're facing the same challenges today. #skystorians #graves #death #substack
Reads as 'The Great British Burial Shake-Up': Out of sight, out of mind? with an image of Victorians at a graveyard.

March 22, 1726. Ordinance from the Society of Saddlers of Newcastle-upon-Tyne... "No brother shall come into the meeting of the company in his night-gown, on pain to forfeit 1s". ❌ No pyjamas allowed! ❌

I launched a blog to post some of my musings that don't quite fit into my PhD thesis... Really excited to share stories from the North East and beyond on early modern graves and death culture!

What a scene of udder chaos! Milk maid melee in Soho, 1805. Never a dull moment when using the British Newspaper Archives for research! 🐄
Newspaper article: "On Friday, a scene, highly diverting to a number of spectators, took place in Greek-street, Soho. Two Welch milk girls, who had previously quarrelled in a cow-keeper's yard at Pancras, on the subject of adulterating the milk sold to their customers, happened to meet rather by surprise, and after bestowing a variety of coarse compliments on each other, the Cambrian spirit infused into the parties burst forth, they upset each other's pails, and commenced a pugilistic contest, which was sustained with equal courage and dexterity for near 15 minute, when victory declared in favour of Griddy Powel, who not only vanquished her opponent but left the humble habiliments of the latter in rags and tatters, distended by the wind. The victor, who resides in Grafton-street, had opposed the general custom of the milk-carriers; namely, to add five threads, or pints of water, to a gallon of milk, honestly contenting herself with three threads, which raised a violent murmuring among the whole fraternity of the pail, many of whom ill used her, particularly her last antagonist, whom she severely punished for the unconscionable imposition practised on the public."

Just about decompressed from #BSECS2025... Feeling lucky to have been on a panel with these guys and to have had some time to explore Oxford. Back in Newcastle now, researching more female coal mine owners, and more!
