Which is why I made sure to say I'm not making light of the loss for people who currently depend on it

We still think a bus coming every 10-15 minutes is 'high frequency.' My kids can't get to work or their mom's in under an hour, and if they miss one of their connections they've gotta wait 30+ mins for the next bus

W/out in any way making light of the loss of Hour Car, for me it only further reinforces that we shouldn't be expecting a patchwork of private enterprises to offset anemic public transportation. Making Metro Transit a real transit powerhouse is superior to subsidizing private transportation

This is one mode I'm trying to use Substack for. This really does consist of notes. It's not a systematic precis or serious critique. It's just organized thoughts that are open to revision. But it's helpful for me to put things together so I can do more with them at a later date

in order that they might not become “like the gods” they were intentionally developed with a chemical deficiency which must be provided from without, & in such a way as to maintain a strict hierarchy It is remarkable the extent to which this looks like most xian theologies of grace

In Deep Space Nine the Jem’Hadar are created to achieve a specific purpose & will become involuntarily irascible when denied the opportunity to act out their natural orientation. But it was not enough to be able to design a species from scratch /

We're definitely agreed that trains can and should be faster, though the raging success of the Borealis shows that even at current numbers the story is not so straightforward as needing to be faster than driving to a significant degree

American sits on the plane an extra 45 mins before takeoff - annoying but tolerable and normal. I can look at my phone American sits on a comfortable train for 45 mins in Red Wing - world is literally ending, I might as well kms

Driving 7 hours sucks, and that's if you drive continuously. But on the train you have these gigantic seats, you can walk around during the ride, stretch at stops, and read and eat in a glass-roofed car. It's not a comparable experience at all

Tony (Soft on Crime) @adalehunt.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
By the time you've gotten to the airport several hours ahead of the flight and gotten yourself into your destination from the airport outside of it, you're absolutely looking at similar times to the train to Chicago Meanwhile Amtrak drops you off at Union Station in downtown

Tony (Soft on Crime) @adalehunt.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
The issue is ppl completely gloss the total travel time of flying: 1) You've got to get to the airport 1b) **at least a couple hours ahead of time (general advice is 3, though this can be shorter for domestic) 2) Then you land in an airport outside of the destination & need to get into the city
120
Tony (Soft on Crime) @adalehunt.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
The fact is Amtrak is at least as fast as flying and pretty much equal to driving whilst being a superior experience to both by lightyears

Tony (Soft on Crime) @adalehunt.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Events like this happen strangely often, and then someone hears of an Amtrak delay of, like, an hour and people talk about the unreliability of trains as the reason they drive to Chicago

From HOME Line, a tale of two cities and their response to the ICE occupation. The mayor of Minneapolis refused to allow a temporary 60-day notice requirement and Council centrists refused to get on board with overriding the veto. Meanwhile, St. Paul's City Council passed their law unanimously.
June saw a notable decline in eviction filings in St. Paul following implementation of the city’s temporary 60-day pre-eviction notice requirement. St. Paul recorded just 74 eviction filings in June, a 69.8% decrease compared to June 2025, while Ramsey County overall saw filings decline by 49.7%. It will take additional months of data to determine the long-term impact of the ordinance, but the initial decrease is significant.

Steve Miller said protestors need to be vanquished with any force necessary. This is important evidence. We conclude some actions of DHS constituted crimes against humanity that will have intergenerational consequences here. It is essential to make clear that this was systematic and intentional

This is a thread about an all-day academic conference of early research findings about the effects of Operation Metro Surge. Kind of harrowing to seeing the damage of the federal government’s combination ethnic cleansing/ideological terror campaign laid out like this.
